Tire Heel-Toeing (cupping)

What could cause a Passenger front tire to Heel-Toe badly, this isnt my vehicle, its my roomates 2001 XJ with a 3 in lift kit and 31 10.5 BFG Mudterrains. He has a Dana 30 front axle with a detroit locker and a chrysler 8.25 rear-end. the passenger rear shock is out right now due to the shock mount breaking. otherwise everything else is in good order. I could really use some help on this since its an expensive tire

from the interweb...

"Cupping can be caused by an unbalanced tire condition, faulty wheel bearings, loose parts, fatigued springs or weak shock absorbers. Check the condition of the shock by forcefully bouncing the front end of the car several times and releasing it on the down stroke. Failure of the vehicle to settle after two strokes suggests worn shocks or struts."

"Cupped tires are usually caused by bad struts. The purpose of the struts is to keep the tires from bouncing off the ground when you go over bumps."

"the term "cupping" is now commonly misused. It's supposed to refer to what you get with bad shocks, but it is now used to refer to irregular wear, which is caused by misalignment. Both are aggravated by low inflation pressure and insufficient rotation practices."

what he said.

And if they are ignored until the cupping is obvious, most times the tire (large offroad tires, anyway) won't recover. Usually it will continue to worsen even after you fix the problem.

check the alignment. Too much toe in will change the camber and cause the tires to cup.
put the cupped tire on the passenger side rear

One of our Cooper's did the same thing on the right front, turned out to be a terrible balancing job. I checked the shocks and they were fine. Had another shop rebalance them and they were terribly out of balance, we were able to get most of the vibration out but they didn't think the tire would straighten out on it's own.

Moved it to the rear and will probably leave it there. I notice the vib but no one else seems to.
