Thoughts on this axle?

I've been looking for an 8.8 for the swap on my '99 TJ. Finally did some calling around today and found one in the correct ratio for my rig (3.73) for $150.

The guy said it's from a '99 Mercury Moutaineer, so based on that year it should have disk brakes and 31-splines.

At this point it sounds like a no-brainer, right? I was good with it until I asked about the mileage. 220,000 miles. I was impressed that the guy was honest about that. He could have just claimed it had 40,000, but he didn't.

Does anybody have experience with these axles in a high-mileage setting like this? Is there anything to watch for? Obviously I'd check it for odd noises or a feeling of "roughness" when rotated, but is this usable axle for the swap, or should I look for something with less miles?

The price has me interested...

My advice would be to take the cover off and check the gears, diff fluid, and the limited slip (assuming it is LS).

If the miles bother you, completely rebuild it.

Thanks Blake, that was my thought as well. The miles don't really bother me, I was just curious to see if anyone else had experience with any major issues at these higher mileages. My thought was to do the swap, and possibly replace the outer axle seals in the process, but just run the rest of it as-is. The guy who owns it says the cover has been pulled and internals checked. I would confirm that with my own eyes at the time of purchase. He's willing to give a warranty with it as well to show that it's a good working basis for an axle build.

If it does have the LSD, I just happen to have a new clutch rebuild kit available for sale.. Summit racing, 30% off new... People knock the LSD, but paired with an Aussie up front in my YJ, there was nothing I could do that I wanted to do...

Also you can add an extra clutch disk and stiffen up the LSD, so it has more of a spool behavior...

As long as the ring and pinion look good its a good price...

It's probably fine, but while you have it out, I would definitely replace the axle bearings and seals and inspect the axles.

I would also add the C Clip eliminator kit, that's only to get the width back to stock TJ width, it's up to you really. The other thing is the LSD is actually fairly decent from my experience, but ultimately a locker is better, and a selectable locker is the best.

Don't get a c clip kit just for width... If you want to eliminate the clip and think you need stronger shafts, then do the super 88 kit, but the stock 8.8 shafts are pretty robust..

Overall width 59.625" (the F8.8 is .950" narrower then a TJ Dana 35).
