Thinking of making my own steel storage trunk. How much for steel?

I want to make my own steel storage area. Just a really simple design with sides, a top and a front. No floor and I'll access it through the back door.

I can do all of the design, mounts and painting. I'll just need a metal shop to do a couple of cuts and bends.

ANYWAY, how much is unpainted 1/8" steel? Let's just say for a 4'x4' sheet and a 6'x6' sheet.

Has anyone done this?

Steel is heavy. Use aluminum.

Depends on where you live. If you have a couple steel supply houses that also do the shear and break deal then 1/8" is pretty cheap. Just measure exactly what you want and they can cut it out for you. They will give you an estimate. I'd re post this in the fab shop if I were you. Lots of good info there. Bob

Not the cheapest, but it will give you an idea of the costs.

I made this one from a big metal ammo crate that I bought at an army surplus store. Painted it with Dupi-color spray on bed liner. I put a couple of handles on the lid for easy lifting and a key lock that bolts through the box through a metal plate on the inside. when the lock is closed the mounted screws cannot be reached. I also bolted a few hooks through the box to lock down my soft doors and whatever so that they don't wander off while I'm at work. I bolted the whole thing down through a metal plate from the inside to the hole where the rear seatbelts mount so I know the box won't be taken out. Total cost: $50 and a Saturday afternoon.
