Teralow too low?

Here in Greece the trails are mixed. Mud and rocks.
Lot of people say that 4:1 reduction in TC is too low for mud.
What do you people thing? will my 3rd gear -after the install
of Teralow- be like the 2nd now? Because we use a lot the 2nd!!!
Thanx in advance!!!

2.5L-4,88 R&P-35s for now.
These might help you.

In the AX-5 tranny:
1st gear = 3.93:1
2nd gear = 2.33:1
3rd gear = 1.45:1

The NP-231 t-case's low range is 2.72:1

The Tera t-case mod makes low range 4.0:1

From here, it is easy to do the math.....pick the tranny gear ratio and multiply it by t-case ratio. Then you can compare which gear with which t-case is nearly the same as another gear with the other t-case.

I don't think 4:1 is too low at all. With a 2.5L I don't think it's possible to be geared too low

When I'm on the trails I use 4LO exclusively, and if I need more wheelspeed for a mudpit or something, I just throw it in 6th. The only time I got stuck I blame on my small MTR's

I believe that i won't have a problem using the 3rd gear instead of the 2nd.
Thanx a lot Stu. Your site is GREAT

You need to keep the input shaft speed of the Tera low t-case to 3,000 RPM or less.

That means you could use 4th gear at 3,000 RPM on the engine tach....or you could use a little more PRM if in 3rd gear, and still more in 2nd, gear, etc.

I agree....I would not (and never did) use 5th gear with my Tera low and it was a not very common for me to even use 4th gear (unless it was on a flat section of ground, no rocks, no mud, nice easy going).....and then I wouldn't push it much more than 2K or 2500 RPM.

The stock TC gears do not have such an issue. Do they?

Good question. How about the 241's gears?

The only thing in the manual is they tell you to keep speed under 35mph in 4LO... maybe that makes sense for a 231, but the engine would really be screaming with 4:1 gears

No they do not.....it is a limitation of the Tera gears.

I don't believe you could achieve 35 MPH with the 4:1 t-case.

iAgree. Rev-wise that'd be equivalent to 140 in top gear

But I still wonder if there is a similar input limitation.

I have a Teralow with 4.88s as well. With my four banger it is great on most trails. And it is good in mud too. I mean how often do you really go through mud so deep that you have to fly across the top? You can always start off in 2 or 3rd and floor it to get the tire speed up. With the Teralow you can get your RPMs higher than 3,000 but you should not for very long.

By the way, my top speed in 4Lo 5th gear is about 20 if I get my RPMs to 3,000.

You are right. I don' t do mud bogging.
Only incline muddy paths in the forests.
I suppose it will be ok.
