Taking off doors for the first time

summer weather has come and I have an itch to take off my full steel doors.

Is there anything I should do on top being careful when unscrewing them? My friend said that I should coat the hinges in something so they don't rust.

Thanks in advance

Only thing you have to take off is the 2 nuts per door on the bottom of the door hinge pin. Other then that they just pull off. When I put them back on I hit the pins up with some silicone or lithium grease to keep them easy to take on and off.

I would be very carful when taking the nuts off if you don't want to chip the paint. Also when u take them off deffenitly put i little non rust stuff on them i have to replace my screws the rust was so bad on them

Yeah, its hard to get them off after they have been on for a while so have alot of WD-40 or other lube handy and as you slowly hinch it up apply more and more to make it nice and smooth. The bolts are long but dont get discouraged, probably about an inch and a half of pulling is what is needed. Oh yeah, remove the #4 fuse from behind the glove box to turn off your overhead lights. (needle nose pliers work) Just to losen the bolts use pliers with a cloth to ensure that you do not chip the paint on that end nut.

I'm trying to figure out why everybody is so worried about chipping the paint. Do you all actually put the nuts back on? I don't even know where mine are. Its not that big of a deal if you plan on taking your doors on and off.

x2 on pulling fuse #4.

And be ready when they do finally come off.

They are always heavier than I expect (or I'm getting weaker).

You have an '04 so it should be pretty easy. Don't be surprised that after you take the nuts off the door doesn't want to budge. I tapped up (lightly) with a hammer use your fingers (like your ordering two pieces of pizza) to guide the hammer.
Don't underewstimate the weight of the door when it lets loose, it'll give you a ride across the garage.
Some will tell you to throw the nuts away - don't.

My nuts have been off since I removed them 18 mos ago.
They just lay around in my garage even during the winter when it's cold outside.
I'm married and my wife doesn't use the TJ that often so they don't get used much.

Make sure to unlatch the little strap as well. Seems common sense but it will sure suprise you if you end up forgetting.

My Wife would be pi$$ed if I left my nuts out in the cold damp garage. She considers them "her property" not mine to abuse in such a manner.

Hehe, these threads always lead to the 'nuts' topic

I think they sell special jars to keep the nuts in. Of course, once they are secured, you will be lucky to get them back out... Kitchen Passes are damn hard to come by

Have fun with the doors off!
