Taking Doors Off. (1st time for me anyways)

Well I took the leap. Sold my XJ and bought an 02 TJ Sahara the week before Christmas. I love it. Black in color with 3 tops. Hard, soft, and bikini. Ohh yeah. D44 with factory Trac-Lok and 3.73s

Long story short...it was like 70* yesterday in New England so I took the soft top for the 1st time. I thought I would of had to wait till atleast May for that

. So I got the top off and tried the doors. No matter how much I pulled I couldnt get them out of the hindges. I know theres a little plastic sleeve in there to act as a bushing for the pins. Can I throw some WD40 or other spray grease in there? Or will that corrode the sleeves prematurely? Its gonna get cold thisup comming week so I prolly wont take them off for the day but I would at least like the take them off just to see how it goes. Thanks in advance. And I have pics but Im at my parents and they are on my computer at home.

welcome, try opening and closing them as you lift, PB blast will help, once you get them off sand the pin and the hole out, then keep them lubed,

you did remove the nut on bottom tight?

Yeah the nuts are off. There was only one on the drivers bottom hindge and the one on the passenger upper hindge. Thanks for the tip. Ill have to try it tomarrow.

yea working them back and forth works wonder so does spraying some wd-40 in there when your trying it, once you get them off be sure to spray wd-40 in the holes and on the posts and it wont ever be a problem again getting them off

WD40 is not a "lube" it will just evaporate in few days, do some research on it, use white litheum grease it will stick around

Its always worked great for me, never any problems getting the doors off except the first time they were taken off

The first time I took mine off it was a PITA. Then when they came off I was expecting the weight and they about killed me. I'm used to my YJ half doors and I can carry both of them at once.

open/closing them really helps, same goes for putting them back on.

i took my doors off for the first time in the jeeps history last month. The prev owner was scared to drive around doorless. It took me about an hour of lubing the hindges up with a product called "Coroision X" and tapping the pins with a hammer all the while working the door back and forth, and lifting up. Mines a 2000 and they were pretty much frozen in, NY jeep. After getting them off I sanded the pins a little, sprayed a little silicon on em (works for zippers too) and now they go on and off like butter.

Yah, the first time is tough.. My band new 06 i had a real hard time getting them off.. I dint even drive around with them off, lol.. i had just read on thsi forum that once they come off once they are easier in the future..

I worked them back and forth, lifting, till they came off... I put grease (axel grease) in the hinges, and on the pins.. and put them back on... I left the nuts off, and just put some grease on the exposed threads..

Hopefully when summer comes they pop right off, no problem.

Did you undo the tension strap on the bottom oh the door to allow the door to open fully?

Thanks for the hints guys. Since its raining up here instead of snowing Illtry the doors tomarrow.

dzntzhellfire - i realized afterward that when I said to use WD40 it would have been to just take the doors off. I was going to use white lithium on the posts and in the holes. Thanks tho.

Chad - yes I had everything disconnected when I was trying. The doors where just frozen in the hindges.

For the first time get someone to help you lift. Just be careful that you don't hit the body with the door when the pins first clear the holes.
Be advised that if you have full doors they will weigh about 70 lbs. apiece!
And last sand the pins with fine sandpaper. They are very ruff from the factory. This will help with future removing.

Mine was three days off the showroom floor the first time I took the doors off, and it was still a PITA. Must be much worse on an older Jeep.

I got in the habit of putting a touch of grease on the pins when I put the doors back on in the fall. Makes them come off much easier the next time.
