Taking doors of for the first time

as the title suggests im going to be removing my doors for the first time. I've owned the jeep for a little over 3 years and due to it being my wife's dd (my weekend warrior) they have never been removed. Now that there's been an adittion to the family the tj will no longer be driven daily and it is now on pure toy status!
now all i want to know is if you guys have any ideas on removing the bolts w/o damaging the factory paint. (flame suit on)

ehh... you could try electrical tape or something, i'd say just use the proper size box wrench and be gentle.

i cracked mine loose and now i just put them on finger tight when I have the doors on so that i can remove them easily.

I wrapped them in blue painter's tape (just because that's what I had on hand). No scratches on the body, but the nuts did get a little dinged. No big deal... they've never been back on since, even when the doors go back on.

A lot of the guys on here ride nutless

If its just a tot why would you ever want to put those back on? I took mine off and they are in my console until... well probably until they get lost.

The tape idea will work other wise or you could buy one of those expensive plastic wrenches I have seen in some catalogs.

I'm jealous of your jeeps toy status.

The dealer carries a tool to do it but it usually doest work when they have been on that long. Just take em off and put them up some where. I left mine on the hood and drove off. So need less to say mine are long gone.

if i didn't have to park on the street when i work day shift i'd never have em on

i'm not so much worried about someone stealing it as a vagrant using it as a toilet

4wd.com

I also recently took the doors off for the first time (for Rubicon!). First of all, you can get a great tool from 4wd.com (Item# 4932181) for about $6! This is much better than a socket. I scratched the driver's side trying to use a socket and box end wrench. Then he showed me this neat little tool, and no scratches on the passenger side.

Also, the doors didn't want to lift out once I removed the nuts. A friend showed me a trick. If you work them back and forth (opening & closing) while you are lifting, they work themselves out. I have an 02 (also toy status), so the difficutly may have been never removing them before.

Have fun!

I to also just took my doors off for the first time!

It took me a loooooooooooooooong time to get the suckers off! and is a great workout with all the lifting and twisting the doors back and forth! It took me around 15 minutes for each door id say to get them off

I would soak your nuts first before you try to bust them free...
