Symptoms of messed up Throw out Bearing or bad clutch??

What are some symptoms of a broken/damaged throwout bearing? I have a metal clanking sound after I shift sometimes and it is erraticly coupled with the engine revving but no acceleration until the metal sound like something sliding into place or sliding free of a bind occurs. Could this be a bad throwout bearing or some other clutch part or might it be a bad throttle positioning sensor? Maybe even the transfer case and/or linkage?

What is my best course of action besides just taking it in to the shop?

seems like I remember something like that happening when the fingers on the clutch presure plate break. Not 100% sure though

how does the noise change when you simply rest your foot on the clutch pedal? if the noise changes and you only moved the pedal 1/4 of an inch, its probably the throwout bearing.

if youre saying the clutch engages after something slides into place, maybe the bearing is completely shot and is binding on the transmission input shaft.

seems like either way whether its the bearing or the fingers, youll have to pull the tranny to fix it. get quotes on a clutch and throwout bearing then pull the tranny and see whats up. then go get the part you need.

it may also be the synchros in your tranny. how many miles?

46k miles, it's an 04 manual 5 speed. i taught myself how to drive stick in it at 34k miles (when i got it) so take that into consideration.

I had a 45k mile checkup drained and filled both diffs and antifreeze/oil change and they didn't say anything was wrong with the diffs.

Also it does idle kind of inconsistently when I first start it up and it is sometimes tricky getting it into first gear (thought that just might be the colder weather though 35*)
