SYE: Easy Install?
Ok, so I'm starting to hear some clunking from the rear, and I haven't investigated it yet but I'd bet its my stock driveshaft yokes, and besides, I've been wanting to do a SYE and CV Shaft install.
I've read some write-ups and watched a SYE install on youtube and it doesn't look to difficult, for those of you that have done it in your own garage, how difficult was it really? I've seen the Hack-and-Tap's as well, that looks pretty easy also, but the threads I read on here about it don't recommend it. Whats the concensus on the Hack-and-Taps?

I wouldn't call it an easy install, but it was not hard. I did mine by myself under the Jeep. By far the hardest part was getting the case back together while making sure the oil pickup tube stayed in place. The rest was pretty much just following instructions. Removing the tc from the Jeep and putting it on a workbench would make the install easier. Having a 2nd set of hands would also make it easier. Watch the video and you might even download the install instructions so you have a clear idea what is done.

I don't think it was very hard at all. I did mine in a parking lot. There are lots of write ups and videos to help you out. Have all the tools ready and it will not be bad at all.

Who has a good deal on the SYE/CV Combo? I've heard the 2 parts can be had for around $500?

For $550, you can get the JB Conversions Super Short SYE and a Tom Wood CV Driveshaft. Oh, that's with free shipping too! It's a real nice kit. High quality components, considerably shorter than the others out there. I ordered mine, and had it in about a week. That was 2 weeks ago. I'm installing it this Sunday.

Northridge.com has a advanced adapters set for $495 with free shipping. And you can add re adj uppers for $199. http://www.northridge4x4.com/proddetail.php?prod=PKG-AA-SYE-CV&cat=157
They are out of the AA sye at the moment but when they called to tell me this they offered to change it to another brand at no cost or I could wait a week or 2 for them to get it back in stock. And the shipping is super fast. I ordered a bunch of stuff Friday and on Monday I got the gastank skid. The rest is supposed to be here by the end of the week.

Make sure you have a good set of Snap ring pliers! Get one with the small paddles at the end and the standard type. I got my from Sears and it made it a lot easier after spend 30 mintues trying to finese them off. Otherwise, it will be a long and frustraing day! Good luck!

I made that video above when I installed my SYE. It was not really very hard to do, just follow the instructions and read several writeups (like this one) so you have a clear idea of what to expect. As mentioned above, be sure to have good snap ring and lock ring pliers (they are not the same, and for most kits you need both.)
One thing I will say, is there is no way a "moderately skilled" person can do it in an hour as it says in the FAQ referenced above. That doesn't mean it's hard, but you need to realistically allocate most of a day to the job. Something always slows you down, so don't expect it to be that quick. If you get lucky and it all goes together smoothly, then great.

I helped LJ_Wil install his and it took us about 8 hrs, but neither of us had done it before so we were going slow, taking pictures, trips to the auto store and lunch. There's a good how to on explor4x4 that shows how to do the install. I totally agree with alvinl, not hard but not super quick either. And the hard part was getting the case back together while making sure the oil pickup tube stayed in place. Just soak everything with pb blaster, and it'b be a good idea to get an impact wrench.

I did it by myself in the parking lot and took me about 6-8 hours (including lunch break). It was not difficult, but you have to have clear instructions. A helping hand would speed up the process.
I went with the kit from www.offroadtoystore.com |

Got my kit from Northridge 4x4. Great service. Took me about 6 hours to do the install and I really took my time to make sure everything was done right. Along with snap ring pliers, get a set of lock ring pliers. The lock rings that hold the gears to the shaft are big and they'll make it ALOT easier.
