the 4-banger! Haha just kidding

There are a couple of good write-ups on people putting in a Hemi (not sure what size) but I think this was for a 2003, so not sure about the '97. The engine compartment seems relatively unchanged so you might have options here.

I plan to put a hemi in mine, its the 03. for a 97 I would go the small block chevy or even ls1. The electronics in my 03 will talk to the hemi computer so to me its just much easier. I bought a ready made harness and I just have to upgrade the fuel tank and evap system to have a smog legal no code replacement. for you it would mean all of this plus a new harness and dash cluster. If your really interested I have a donor harness and an under dash harness, you would still need the new control harness and the cluster. They are not cheap, 500 for the two harnesses I have and probobly another 250 for the third. Cluster would be another 100. Add that to all the other costs and you would be pushing 8-9K. If your interested and have the shipping I will be selling my I6 and 5spd tranny in about 2 months, once I get into my new house and stop travelling for work.

Check out junkyarddog.com for the 4.0L or just call all the junkyards in your yellow pages. 4.0 liters aren't in short supply.

If you really want to swap another engine in an LS1 would be cool and they can be found in late 90's vettes, z28's, transams, and firebirds. I have heard of other people doing this swap so you may be able to find some information or write ups on it. However, it won't be easy or cheap. Your Jeep will probably be laid up for a while.

You could build a 4.7L stroker motor out of a 4.0L. Everything bolts in, no weird adaptations or hassles making noncompatible parts work together. It took me a weekend to take the old one out, and a weekend to put the new one in.

You can even save money by reusing some of your parts. I reused my head (after a lot of performance work) but was unable to reuse my old block.

I get about 300hp and 450ftlbs at around 3200 with mine. Here is the article that inspired me. I did a lot more head work then Tony to achieve my numbers.

Good Luck

Well go read this thread about the build I just did on my TJ. Since yours is a 97 also your best to stay away from a Hemi due to the new dash/wiring you'll have to deal with. Also a lot of emission items also have to be added to the Jeep to make the Hemi work.
Instead you can find a 97-99 5.2 and swap it in real easy. You can get a wiring harness done by www.backwoodsoffroad.com for $600 or try it yourself. You can keep your stock tranny since it was behind a 6cyl and it will live if you keep your foot out of it. You can also set the engine in where you might not have to change driveshafts.
