Swapping 4cyl for 6cyl
I'm an idiot when it comes to searching, Because i'm sure this has been posted 1,000 times. Sure couldn't find it.
Is it worth it to purchase a 4cyl TJ, and swap in a 6cyl? noticed the price on 4cyl is considerably cheaper then the 4.0 I'm looking at 97-2000 TJ's. I dont want the 4cyl, but if its feasible to drop the 4.0 in it, i will consider it. Thanks for the help, and the links to posts where this is discussed. Cause i know thier coming. ![]()

Personally I swapped out my 50hp 2cyl to a 4cyl for the power, especially after getting 33's.

WTF? I don't think there is a car out there that ever came with a 2cyl so you're obviously very mistaken. TJs only came with 4 and 6 cylinders.

Now that Jeep is owned by Fiat we may get some 2 cylinders. They used to be famous for their 2 cylinder autos.

Speaking from personal experience with a 3 year long project I refused like to hell to let go and admit I took on more than I should have, get a 6cyl and rebuild it. If you get a 4 cyl and decide to drop in a 6 cyl here's a list of most of what I remember that you'll need:
-4.0 Engine, valve cover, oil pan, timing cover, and all the bolts -AX-15, BA-10, or TF999 Transmission - might be mistaken on the auto but for sure the standard AX-5 will not work with a I6 -rebuild transfer for new input shaft or buy rebuilt transfer with correct spline inpute shadft plus speed sensor gear -Driveshafts -motor mounts -engine frame mounts - have to cut old frame mounts and weld I6 mounts in -transmission mounts cause they are different -wiring harness in dash and under hood unless you want an extreme nightmare of a mess with wiring - trust me I tried the hard way first -pulleys for an I6 -new radiator as the single core I4 radiator isnt big enough to handle the cooling needs of an I6 -engine and tranny sensors -intake manifold for an I6 -exhaust manifold for an I6 -exhaust for an I6 -starter for an I6 -hoses, belts, gaskets for an I6 -alternator for an I6 lots and lots and lots of patience, money, and time and Im sure Im forgetting something to add to that list I took my 89 YJ 2.5L and completely overhauled it into a 93 4.0L. I went with 93 because nothing about an 89 will work with a 4.0L unless severely modified. I know the TJ uses an OBII system and that year YJ uses an OBDI system but the principles are the same. Looking back on it I would have saved a lot of money if I had decided to go with a prefferred year and kept all my parts to that year, but it was alot of live and learn. Moral of the story though is rebuilding a jeep that came with the motor and tranny you want is always far easier and cheaper than converting the entire drivetrain to the one you want. I did mine because I loved my YJ but wanted a 4.0L, not because it was the smarter route. Four years later I sold it for 9k but probably spent that much converting it. Only good thing was the rear end was geared for a 4cyl now with a 4.0L and a centerforce II clutch so it would push 33"s really well and would squall 31"s from a stop. Here is some of the pics from my project on photbucket. I moved and lost a bunch of em but I think you'll get the idea: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m53/xantasm28/2006-03-10/

like posted above you will need a engine preferably complete with harness, pcm, starter, and accesories.
engine mounts the rubber isolators are the same according to my neiborhood napa store. radiator. tranny with tcase or get a imput shaft from a junk tcase that was behind a 6 cylinder drivetrain. frame mounts for the engine. check on ebay i found some dirt cheap. driveshafts. it really is not that hard if you know what you are doing and have auto repair and fabrication experiance. i am doing this same swap in my 2000. i found a guy on ebay that cut me a deal on a complete turn key set up for 2grand. i am going with a tom woods drive shaft as i am doing a sye because of my lift. by the way my price tag so far is at 2700 bucks. that is for parts. since i am doing it myself i dont count the labor. besides i like doing stuff like this. i have all the peices parts for mine now just need to set aside about a week to do it. plus my friend is doing the welding for me on the frame mounts. there is a write up that was done that is very informative. i cant think of his name though.

If you already know you want the 6cy, it will be much less expensive overall if you pay a little extra for the 4.0L up front.
