I also want to add what a great resource Stu's site has been for me. And also want to add another vote on the anti-microsoft trilogy that is going on. I am currently an MCSE in version 2003 and like to say that I am certified to not like Microsoft.

If you would like some assistance in setting up a non-microsoft website, please PM me and I can get the ball rolling. The company I work for does this for many other companies in central Iowa currently and they know what they are doing. We have a fiber connection directly to the backbone of the internet (that's fast by the way...) My expertise is in the Novell products that they offer, otherwise I'd help directly.

Jim

Stu, your site has helped me out plenty of times and has been the source of hours of reading at work, and I'm glad it'll be up and running soon. As for front page, that's why I stay away from it because I've seen too many problems with it and I use dreamweaver for publishing stuff (since it comes with it's own ftp setup it makes things tons easier).

Hey Stu,

Your site is just as valuable as my factory service manual......No.......more valuable, better pictures!

Please keep up the great work...I slipped a little donation under the door, I hope it helps with the transition.

Should we start another fundraiser for stu? Stu,....post a picture of your dog next to an empty bowl and we are in buisness! Regardless...... you need some site advertisement stickers. I'll buy one! I can't say how many times I used your site for reference. I was gonna use it this weekend... just got some toys from Troy.

An update.....still waiting for the domain to transfer to the new registrar so I can upload the site to its new home.

From my former host......

Dear Client,
Thank you for contacting Ipower Technical Support.

We are sorry to hear that we are losing your business.

It appears they spent about as much time saying goodbye as they did trying to fix the 3 week old problem.

More progress.....

Got an e-mail that said the domain transfered.

Time to see if it has trickled down to my DSL provider.

I'm transfering the site to the new server. So far, so good. I put the movies on hold for the first round of transfer and will send them up when the write-ups are all in place. (work before entertainment!)

It will probably take a few days for everyone's ISP to get updated for the new IP address of the server.

Thanks to everyone for the patience, support, and offers to help out. It says a lot about who you folks are....pretty good Jeep friends from where I stand.

Thanks again!

Well, the Google cached site is working fine for me, including pics, etc. Thanks so much for your site, Stu. I think you know more about Jeeps than Jeep does.

Edit: Welp looks like the non-cached version is working just fine for me now.

The write-ups are on the site along with the PDFs, pics, etc.

The movies are migrating their way to the server at this time. Serveral more hours should take care of it.

Stu, you have a great site with lots of info. Do us all a favor, dump Microcrap and get a real OS. Apache and Linux rule.

Heh.. I actually read the entire message you posted about what your problems were with iPower.. I work at the largest hosting company in Canada and that sounded so familiar it made me laugh. The truth of the matter is that Front Page Extensions are kind of like Windows. If they get messed up, the only good way to fix them is reinstall. And if that doesn't fix them, reinstall the whole server rather than just your site. They are extremely painful for the staff of the hosting companies as they are complete garbage, truth be known. I don't work in the customer support area like that any longer (I build larger custom systems now for larger companies), but I remember FP extensions being one of the worst parts of that job.

If you want a really stable system, stay away from anything Windows or MS related on the server side.

1) run your site on a Unix system (Linux or FreeBSD preferred). It will be 100 times more reliable because of the security, straight forwardness of maintenance, etc.
2) don't use FP extensions.. it's only a 5 minute job for a person like myself to write a nice little hit counter that works in PHP or as a CGI, and I'd write it for free.. or you can download any of the hundreds available on the net for free
3) you can design the site with FP, but don't use any of the extensions, and upload to your site using FTP not FP extensions.

Your previous host was right though.. uploading with FTP will mess up everything if you have FP enabled for your site. If FP is not enabled for your site though, FTP will never fail you, and Front Page can use FTP just fine.

Microsoft did a somewhat decent job with making Front Page (I'll not dive into all the standards the HTML code generated violates..) but the protocol they made for transferring the site is very unstable.

Another forum member mentioned it briefly already, but mirrors would be great for you! You could have a few US mirrors, a CA mirror, etc.. Then you'd have only small amounts of bandwidth at each location and you could probably find people that would mirror it for free.

For example, I'd host a mirror on a custom Unix system here that would pull the content automatically from your main site once a day. That way you would never even have to log into the mirror. You'd just assign a hostname like ca.stu-offroad.com to the Canadian mirror, and then at the top of your page you could put a little menu bar something like

Choose a mirror close to you: TX.US WA.US AK.US AB.CA

Each of those would be a link to your custom hostname you've given to the page somewhere else. If the mirror started not performing well for some reason and the volunteer that was hosting it wasn't able to get the problem fixed themselves, you'd just have to remove the link to their mirror site or change the hostname to point to someone else that was willing to mirror for you in that area.

All that aside, I have to say your site is the most impressive Jeep site on the net and I hope you have more success with it and the new hosting provider! I can't wait to try out many of the mods you've done on your page.
