Strange noise, wtf?

So my wife, kid and I are rolling down the 5 at around 70mph and all of a sudden the highway feels all washboard. Shortly after I hear this sound coming from underneath like something metal is dragging. I pull over to the exit and the brakes are making a hellacious screech like the brake pads just suddenly disappeared. Got out and checked, and everything visible looks cool. Drove some more and grinding/screeching continues. I turn on the street towards our destination and it's got speed bumps every 100 ft. Third speed bump, the noises all stop...We parked, played, and came back after a couple of hours. Drove home 1/2 surface streets, 1/2 freeway. Not a peep. So now I feel stupid. Just something caught in there?
Haven't done much but kickin' up dust and puddle-whomping lately (kid always falls asleep by the time I get to Hungry Valley or the like.)

Thanks for any insight on my noobish panics

It's possible something kicked up from the highway and got stuck between a backing plate and brake rotor and got lodged for a while. I've had that happen with rocks before.

That's all I could figure too. Thanks for the help. Everything seems to be running fine now. Anything I should double check?
