STOCK 4 CYL: 32x11.50 BFG AT or 31x10.50 BFG AT???
whats goin on guys, as of right now i am running 30x9.50 BFG AT's on my 4 cyl with my stock rims and when the weather breaks here in PA im going to be running Cragar Soft 8's and am wondering which size tire i should run with them? ive decided that i want to get BFG AT's again but im kind of concerned about running 32's with my stock 4 cyl...should i be worried if i decided on the 32's? thanks alot

you should be good just a side note tho if your going to be running that kind of tire you might want to consider a bb since your tires are going to be rubbing bad if you wheel it

well with a 4cyl your mileage is going to go down with either choice, but I would think you should be fine with 32s as long as you don't do a lot of highway driving, and remember it will be a bit more sluggish.

You will be okay because you have 4.10's, but like the others said expect a little sluggish at highway speeds. From your 30's, I think you can probably expect a 2-3 mpg decrease to the 32's. Even that might be a little optimistic depending on how you drive, the season, etc etc. But it'll look great

Im running 32s on my 4 banger, it is right that you will loose 2-3mpg. I went to getting 16-17mpg to about 13-15 depending how i drive and if the wind is in my favor.

I have 33's on 4:10's with the 4 cyl. and it sucks in the mountains. I'm going 4:88's though, so I can use 5th gear again.

I'm not sure if this thread is still alive, but I'm going to give it a shot. I have a question similar to the original post. I have a 4 banger with 4.10 stock gears and 33x12.5s on it. As already mentioned, it is incredibly sluggish in top gear. I've decided that I am going to go smaller in tire size for now as about 95% of my driving is on paved road. May do a gear-swap later on, but for now I want a second set of tires. I'll keep the bigger ones for mudding, as the Jeep handles them well in lower gears.
So, how big of a tire can I put on a completely stock drivetrain 97 TJ and not sacrifice torque and power as I am now? It originally came with 225/75 15s if that helps any. They will still be mud terrains or an agressive all terrain. I'm posting here as opposed to starting a new thread since some become aggravated and simply say to "search" for the answer. I have been searching and can't quite find the answer I need. I'm thinking of a 30 or 31 inch, maybe 9.5 or 10.5 wide. Jeep also has a 2.5 inch body lift on it. Any advice? ![]()

I went with 31's and the 2.5" OME lift on my 4-banger. No regrets. I can keep up with the big boys on any trail I'm willing to hit with my ONLY car (I'm in PA too and hit Rausch Creek often enough), and on the road I can cruise along comfortably at 70 MPH. I put allot of research/thought into it, and that's the best compromist I could come up with. When I was looking into it, it seamed like if you went above 31" tires, suddenly you have start dropping ALLOT of extra cash. i.e.:
-The stock wheel's wouldn't have the proper backspacing, so you need to replace those -It would be sluggish on the road, so since it's the DD you'ld probably have to re-gear -31" spare barely fits on the tailgate (you'll need to cut the rubber bumpers down) and any higher weight tire has the potential to warp the tailgate, so you'ld be looking at a spare tire carrier/rear bumper combo. -anything above 31" off-road and you're looking at the potential of snapping the D35 due to the tire's additional weight, and allot of people recommend replacing the axles with D44's (which also means more overall weight and worse gas mileage). -Greater loss of fuel efficiency. I used to have 30" AT's and went to 31" MT's. A trip that used to take me half a tank now takes 3/4. I get around 15 MPG. Personally, I think for a 4-cyl DD the 2.5" and 31" tires is a great combination. It's going to look mean and be a blast on the trail, while getting you to and from work reliably and comfortably. Now if you have a 6-cyl, and an extra wad of cash laying around, that's a whole different story. |

I Own a 4banger and I ran 31x10.50x15 on stock rims and stock suspension. IT rubbed a little under full turns.
I performed a 2" bb lift, added spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers and add 2 washers to my steering stops and now I run 32x11.50x15 without any problems. this is on stock 7" rims with 5.5 backspacing
