Stinger bumper question

Whats the deal with them? Are there any benefits? Personally I don't like the look, just curious if they have a function.

If you roll, you sit on the stinger instead of your hood (hopefully). If you run into something, or slide up something with a steep entry angle, you scratch or dent the stinger and not your bumper/hook/winch/lights etc..

edit: I don't like the look of the big ones, but I do understand why people have them for buggys and rock crawling etc.. I do however like the look of a smaller one that's not too obtrusive.

I used to think it would keep people from cutting me off.

Then some Floridiot cut me off at the exact same spot in the road two days in a row.

There was a lot of cussing and tailgating involved until my turn off.

Basically it helps provide stand-off from the front end and hood. I like some.
