Still Getting Front Driveshaft Noise

I am getting noise coming from my front driveshaft, sounds like the drivehshaft is loose or something I don't know. Sounds like a dragging chain. THe wierd thing about it is that I only get the noise when it is cold and it only makes the nose for the first 2-3 minutes of driving. It is like once it warms up it stops. I want to get this fixed if it is a major problem before I go wheelin.

Have you physically checked the shaft? Try removing it and see what shape the joints are in, and drive it with the front shaft removed to make sure the noise is really in the shaft.

Ok I will try that. How hard is it to remove the shaft? I have never done it before but I'm sure I can figure it out. Is there any good guides out there? I saw the one on stu offroad's site but it is kinda hard to follow. Also what am I looking for in the joints to be bad? I mean once I get the shaft off what am I looking for?

Are you sure it's not your fan clutch? My stock one started to make a noise like that until it would release and spin free, either after a few minutes of driving or revving the engine to 3000rpm for about 5-10 seconds. It finally stuck for good, so I replaced it with a Crown one, but that one's bad now, too. Before you start your motor, try to turn the fan by hand. It should turn with a little resistance. If it is really stiff or doesn't turn at all, drive the jeep until the noise stops, kill the motor and check it again. If it now turns freely, that's what made the noise.

cheapjeep thank you and I will try that just in case but I don't think thats it because as I slow down say when coming to a stop sign, the noise slows down as well. Im almost entirely positive that it has something to do with the driveline. If it isn't a U joint then its a bearing or something. BTW how do you grease the joint? And if I take the shaft off what am I looking for in a bad joint?

I am going wheelin in 2 weeks and want to make sure that my driveshaft isn't going to explode on me or anything while I am up there.

got the same exact problem. You described word for word what my Jeep does. Let me know what you find out. A few mechanics have said it's the transfer case going bad but I'm praying that's not the case. I'll let you know if I find anything myself cuz I'm positive we're in the same boat.

I have a feeling it might be the transfer case bearing. Reason I say so is because last night I threw it in 4 Hi and drove straight down the straight and the noise changed. No longer loose sounding but more like a bad bearing noise. Ill let you know via PM if I get anything though.

I've got the same noise coming from my front drive shaft. At first I thought it might have been the T-Case of the front diff. Upon further inspection, a bracket, and I am not sure which, rests upon the drive shaft when I put it in gear. It's a god awful noise and only seems to do it when the car warms up and has been driven for an hour or so.

Any idea as to what kind of bracket might be moving when it is put into gear?

I still have not looked into this noise but I am pretty sure it is a joint, that is sure what it sounds like on mine. It just recently got significantly worse. How do you go about greasing the joints???

Well if you have the stock u joints or non greaseables joints you are out of luck. It sounds to me like the typical "angry sparrows". I actually just did a rebuild of my front DS not too long ago.

Here is Stu's write up on how to do it:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/driveshaft/driveshaft-5.htm

If it has recently got significantly worse then you really should not ignore it. If you have not removed your front driveshaft I would do that first just to make sure it is that. There are 4 bolts on the front differential that you need to remove and 4 more on the rear. Both I believe are the same size (8mm maybe, but don't quote me). The easiest thing for me is to go from the backside of the Transfercase and remove the 4 bolts from the driveshaft like that.

Definitely remove your front DS asap so you don't lock up the CV assembly and have a whole other mess of problems on your hands. If in fact that's what it is.

Sorry guys, never posted up that I got this problem fixed. Unded up pulling the front driveshaft and rebuilding it with new U joints and a new centering ball. (tried to clean the old one with an air compressor and it didn't turn out to good. Bearings went everywhere). I did this on a warm weekend about a month ago. Bad thing was that monday we got a bunch of snow dumped on us and i was still working on my driveshaft. . So I was stuck with 2wd completly. I finally found a new centering ball and crawled under my jeep monday with with snow dripping and dropping all over me and got it installed.

So basically that was my problem, my U joints were 11 years old and were whining that they wanted to retire.
