Steering upgrade advice

Well.. i finaly killed my factory steering

[IMG][/IMG]

Ive been looking around, and have a couple options in mind. one being Rock Krawlers X Factor
http://www.rockkrawler.com/
click Wrangler..then TJ Suspension Build Components.. its on the bottom

and the other JCR 1ton
http://www.jcroffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1TNSTOTK&Cat egory_Code=S6

or possibly put together my own, but time is a factor. Ive looked at the currie ones, and a few others, and they just dont look as durable. Im dont mind drilling out holes, but dont wanna have to cut/weld anything it at all possible. Will the over the knuckle setup force me to move my sway bars? Any input would be awesome.

I don't think I would have posted a pic of a bent tie rod with a recovery strap still attached to it. That's a classic photo, I have saved it to my disk for posterity.

Have you considered the Currie upgraded steering?

http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/product.aspx?id=1219

A lot of wheelers on this board have it (I'm actually getting it myself after researching the subject for a while).

The ones you listed seem fine too as far as I can tell. I wish the rockkrawler one had more details though. I noticed the JCR needs fabrication - is this something you would mind?

What's with the strap on the tie rod?

haha no. it does look that way though doesnt it. it was bent straight down, so my buddy pulled it forward which worked.. but then we couldnt figure out how to get that stinger shaped bend out of it so we wraped that strap to the apex of the bend, then around my axle and to his jeep, but we were on a hill and he couldnt get good enough traction were he was at to pull it much. so we took it off and he man handled it on the front of his jeep.

Yea you cant find much detail on the rock krawler, that is a downside. and the JCR looks to be just a little cutting and drilling. but so long as i dont have to move my front sway bars i dont mind. Ive looked at the currie but they seem to be just a little bit on the weakside compared to the others, and i dont wanna have to go through this again ya know?

and no.. i didnt attempt to be pulled up a hill via my tie-rod

I wouldn't eliminate the Currie HD steering kit from your list of possibilities. It's stronger than you think it is, it survives plenty of 5+ and 5++ rated rock crawling trails in Johnson Valley Calif with far bigger tires than you're running.

Currie's tie rod and drag link are monsters but the tie rod was also designed to give just before something else like the tie-rod ends break. Any stronger and you'd be faced with breakages rather than a mild bend as it usually does at most. It's a well proven combo.

I hadnt thought about it that way Jerry. That makes prefect sense. much rather bend than break and be totaly screwed on the trail. Currie is sounding pretty good now... but its more expensive. DOH!

guess i dont have to cut/drill anything out with the currie kit correct?

Total bolt-on kit, no modifications or drilling necessary.

hmmmm.........stick with the story that you were doing a recovery from the tie rod. It's much more enjoyable.
