steering mystery!

if I open the reservoir cap after driving, should there be air escaping from high pressure inside the system, air entering due to low pressure inside the system (sort of like a vacuum inside), or nothing noticeable due to the pressure release valve. When I open the cap now, air is rushing in--I am pretty sure there should be no pressure there.

I am having a problem with my steering slipping sometimes when driving, and play in the wheel when turned, and steering not tight like it used to be. I now turn the wheel around almost twice to turn around a 45 degree corner when it used to take less than one turn. A new gearbox was just put on to fix these problems, and the problems still there, but a little less. Now there is a clicking sound when I turn the wheel that was never there. I believe that whatever caused the 1st gearbox to go will cause the new one to go. I have been associating this problem with a ditch I hit, but maybe it is something else that is happening that is causing the issue.
