starting trouble; now check engine light (need help)

the engine on my 97 tj with 95,000 miles on the 4.0 turned over today but didn't immediately start. i had to turn it over a couple of times then it started but died if i let off of the gas. then i turned it over for a bit again and it started but would die unless i kept the rpm's up; if i let them go down to normal idle, it would idle really rough then die. finally it started normal and i drove it around without any further problems. now the check engine light is on??? also, now it starts, idles, and runs like normal except for the check engine light. does anyone know what the problem is or might have been?

turn the ignition key on-off-on-off-on within five seconds. Leave it in the on position then watch the odometer display where the trouble codes will display. Go to this link to see what the codes mean...

It sounds a bit like you might have battery problems. Could be a bad ground or bad connection at the battery too. See what the codes are then post back for more ideas from people.

If the link doesn't work properly, look for the service manual link under Jeep Resources at the bottom of the page.
