Spark plug crush washer direction

I got a set of Autolite APP985 that came with crush washers. One side is flat and one is tapered. Which side goes toward the plug screw base? The NGK's that came out just have a flat washer so they are no help.

I've wondered if the washer went a certain way or not. Never seen any instructions on it. I always put the wider part of the washer against the head.

I always put the narrower part towards the engine block, although it doesn't matter...I still always do it.
