Spare Tire Size vs Tire Size

Can I use my 28" spare with my 31" tires if I get a flat or will that cause damage to my gears?

That will definitley eat up the differential, specially on the rear if you have trac-loc.
LIFT IT!.....fat chicks can't jump high. 99 Sahara.......3inch black diamond lift, quick discos, 32X11.50 BFG all terrains.

If you only have one tool, a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.

As long as you do not have locking differentials, you will be fine. Without lockers only 1 wheel turns.
2007, 4 door, powered by a minivan engine, locked and riding on 35's.
