So... figured out what that odd clunking sound was.

Yep, that'd do it.

Now then. Excuse my ignorance. What do I need to fix this? Looks like I need a new one 'o them boot deals. Is that the only part I'm going to have to replace? Where can I find one?

Is it unsafe to drive in the meantime?

You'll need the whole link. $20-30 probably. I had to replace both side of mine last summer but then lifted it in November, so I have fairly new ones just sitting the corner.

Very very common problem.

I suggest looking for a pair of aftermarket swaybar disconnects.

easier/faster to disconnect your swaybar when you go wheeling. disconnecting them when going off-road allows more flex, better ride and doesnt stress the end links out like that causing them to break.

It allows you to disconnect the sway bar for when you are on the trail. This allows your axle to move around (flex) more.. more wheels on the ground means better traction.

I agree with the above poster.. go with an aftermarket set like JKS. Keep in mind that if you lift your jeep you will likely have to buy a new set if the lift doesn't come with quick disconnects.

If you just want to fix it for now, check your local club's website and ask for a stock sway link. Chances are someone will have aftermarket ones installed and have some stock ones laying around for real cheap or free.

A pitman arm puller will make unseating that tapered bolt a lot easier.

The other advantage not mentioned, is they wont break again, so you won't have to re-address this issue at a later time.

And if you don't have/feel like getting one of those putting a pipe wrench on ball will rip it out. Might take a little heat if its in there really good.

I wish that happened to mine.

I had to torch the bushing to get it off.

JKS makes nice, beefy, noise free ones. Very easy to pop on and off.

Or you could make your own. Here's the thread I'm following:

Scotch740 better home brew disconnects

It could save you some money over the commercial offerings.

FWIW,
