i'm sure theres a ton of unsafe ways to tow people out, that can result in some serious injuries. just wondering if theres a right way to do this if i happen upon a standed motorist....that happens to be smokin hot.

For one do not use a strap with metal hooks. If the strap breaks those hooks become missles.

Edit: For example, you dont want this to happen! http://www.southernhighrollers.com/tips/articles/a_near_miss_from.htm

d rings and recovery strap, its all about being gentle, especially if your pulling out a car or mini van. you dont want their bumper fllying off. if you have a winch i would use that

have the person that is stuck hook up their vehicle and have them sign a waiver that you are not gonna be held responsibe for damages to thier vehicle.

Unless the stuck vehicle has a very durable tow point, I would recommend having the smokin hot stranded motorist sit in your warm Jeep while waiting on a tow-truck.

Check your local laws too. in some states its illegal to perform recoveries on the side of the road. it can endanger other third party cars. its a nice deed, but its pretty dangerous.

If it's a truck or vehicle with tow points, have them sign a waiver (I keep copies in the glove box) and go for it - slowly - with a good tow strap with loops, no hooks. If it's a car or vehicle with no tow points - 1-800-AAA-HELP. Don't even try it. It took two damaged vehicles for me to learn my lesson.

But if you must - you can winch or tow by wrapping through the rim and around the tire. I saw a tow truck do this once when my son was deep in a ditch, but they were actually able to lift the car and then drag it.

Many good points so far.

To reiterate some of those I think are important:

1. Use a recovery strap with loops at both ends. No metal hooks or chains.

2. Good recovery points are a must. Many cars will not have this. A pickup or an SUV is more likely, but a sedan or hatchback is unlikely.

3. Also the legality issues. Cops and tow trucks generally do not like you performing recoveries on the side of the road. There are some exceptions though, it all depends on the situation.

It all depends on the situation yes. But if you did need to pull out a car what would be the best place to hook to? Also does anyone know of any waivers online someplace that are already made up for this type of situation? It would be nice to have.

out of the 5 vehicles we pulled out last year only 2 of them had hook on them. but we weighed our odds and pulled the others out ever so carefully

Back up as far as you can and floor it....

...until you hit them and push them over the side of the road, then tell them to buy a Jeep.

Are recovery straps the same thing as I what have known straps called snatch straps? They have the loops on the ends and can stretch to help pull/snatch out the stuck vehicle. I have a 3 1/2" one I keep in my 250SD, and a 2 1/2" strap I just tossed in my Jeep after I read where you don't want to use a strap too wide for the recovery vehicles weight. I bought these from JC Whitney many yrs ago.

If its a car with a straight axle you can tow from that. Most older coupes, hatchbacks, sedans etc from the 90s and before have a straight rear axle like us.

Most newer cars, from my experience, have independent rear suspension and I wouldnt personally pull from that.
