Snap Ring/Retaining Ring Pliers SYE Install

Okay, It seems pretty obvious from my search that I need a large set of snap ring or retaining ring pliers. Can anyone be more specific? What size or better yet a brand and a part number.

Jerry- I saw in an old thread that you had found just the right tool on a Snap On truck...any idea what that part number was???

Thanks guys.

I never saw a snap-ring tool in Sears that would open widely enough to do this particular job. No idea what the p/n was for the tool I bought off the Snap-On truck but the rep knew exactly what I wanted when I said none of the other snap-ring pliers I had seen would open widely enough.

I think any of the tool trucks that service garages and dealers would have this particular tool.

How far do they need to open?

I used these and a cheapo snap ring pliers (didn't even have a spring loaded hinge) from sears. It was about 20 bucks for both of them. I don't know, but I didn't have a problem with the one snap ring or all of the lock rings I had to install/remove. I even told my dad to go inside cause I was about to get aggravated. About 1 minute later I had the last two on and I was all done with the lock ring part. I even had to take apart the t-case a second time, and this time I bet on the 2 lock rings I removed and replaced I spent all of 1 minute using those sears lock ring pliers in that link. Just open up the lock ring slightly larger than the diameter of the output shaft, start at the back and slide it all the way down to where it belongs. My first instinct was to open it wide enough to go around the output shaft, and that would have been a PITA. I am sure you won't be upset getting a good set of lock ring pliers, but if you only need 'em once, get the cheaper ones.

i just fought with those for a day and the only advice i can give you is to get a heavy duty pair of snap ring pliers, a second set of hands and multiple screwdrivers. o and either a stiff drink or a case of beer for afterwards....I HATE SNAP RINGS!!!

How did the SYE install eventually go? Get your problem fixed? (I'm going to be tackling this in a few weeks.)
