Skid Plate Problems. Busted trans mount = drop skid plate. But I've got a problem.

I've been lucky in much of my work in properly unfreezing bolts that haven't been off in a while, but that ended today.

I tried to replace my trans mount. I removed the 3 driver side skid plate bolts. (One was really hard to break loose, and all were a PITA.) Only to find that on of the other side bolts had it's 8mm bolt stripped to much for me to get any traction in removing it. So I put the other sides bolts back in place. When I torqued down the "stiff" bolt" it popped and stripped out the frame bolt I believe. So now I've a busted trans mount and only 5 tight bolts holding on the skid. What to do next. Can I buy new bolts at the dealership? I need a good back out tool for these very rusty and stuck bolts. (I also broke a 1/4" to 3/8" non-impact adaptor with my impact wrench because these stupid allen bolts suck)

That bolt that broke free isn't stripped, you broke loose the nutsert in the frame.

95 xj bone stock for now

How to fix that? Its the driver side rear one. So little hope of reaching it with any tools, I would think.

o I slide the nutsert in the frame and then use the homemade tool to cause the nutsert to collapse? Then weld (or Loctite before that). Why not re-weld old nutsert as easy answer?

Q: where do you get such a nutsert for a small town, must buy online kind of guy. And can I buy replacement bolts from the dealer?

You can buy replacement bolts and nutserts from the dealer (or one of the online resources for mopar parts), the part numbers are listed in this thread:

If the part numbers for the bolts are not there, they should know what to give you after giving them the nutsert part number. You could also just get the bolts from a local hardware store.

If you are able to get the bolt out of the loose nutsert, and the old loose nutsert is still in good condition you can try to use the tool to "tighten" up the nutsert, and then tack weld it. If the nutsert looks to be in pretty bad condition, I'd probably just replace it to save yourself a headache down the road. It's too easy of a job to put off.

You can get nutserts that will work from a hardware store, but the ones from the dealer are usually better quality than what you get elsewhere. All of those details are covered in the thread linked above.

A little tip if you can't get the bolt out of the old loose nutsert. If you loosen the others on that side of the skid plate and use a crow bar (or similar tool) to pry down on the plate it can sometimes create enough friction to allow the bolt to turn out of the nutsert.

Thanks! Good info. Somehow I missed the part numbers being all lit up in blue. I sure wish I was a welder. I would be If I thought I could get 220volt out the front of my rental.
