I had the local 4Wheel Parts regear my 06 LJ from 3.73 to 4.56. My Jeep somehow got a Rubicon D44 rear axle so they had to reorder the correct parts along with a carrier. All this happenned about 3 weeks ago and I just realized when I saw a post for someone looking for 3.73 gears that I did not get my old parts back. They did not ask me if I wanted them or not. When I went up there today and asked them about it they just said that they chunk them if people don't ask for them back after a few days. Were these parts worth anything? I was wondering what other shops policies are on this sort of thing. Are you supposed to specifically ask for YOUR parts back?
Not many people are willing to buy used R&P gears so it's probably not a huge loss. It's generally more difficult to set up used gears too (you have to match the old pattern) so some installers may even charge a bit more to install them.
What would be the difference in the rubi D44 and the D44 that comes in the LJ, did it have TRU-Lock locker in it. I don't understand how a shop like 4 Wheel Parts could make that mistake in the first place, did they order gears for a D35.
It is a toy,and you should play with it.
People buy Used R&P's all the time and the store may not sell the parts per say but the employees do. If a customer doesnt want or ask for parts back they (employees) will keep and resale. I am not saying every shop does it but it does happen. Big market for stock parts.

ftdranger-thats doubtful...although it would really suck to have a locker already in your rig and have someone else keep it and come up on it. But if it had a locker, it wouldn't have had that ratio, as I believe the carrier would not accomodate the 3.73 gears.
I appreciate everyones input. First let me say that I am happy with the 4wheel parts guys. They are a good store and seem like a great group of guys. I look forward to getting to go wheeling with the ones who have jeeps or whatever. I will continue to do business there. The issue here was whether or not it is customary to have to ask for your parts back or if the shops should be obligated to give them back without asking. I feel 100% sure that if I presssed the issue that they would come up with some parts to please me. But, I didn't want to be an a??hole about it. I did wait 3-4 weeks to ask for them. I was just curious as to what other shops procedures are regarding this.
