Shifter-Shifter, get your Shifter.

I just spent 30 minutes replacing my automatic shifter handle with an after market one. Works awesome.

Look at picture #5 in post #1. That is the opening of the shifter handle. There are no screws or nuts holding this thing on. Take both hands, palms up and with the shifter shaft centered between both hands, "pop" the handle upwards firmly. It may take a few tries but it will come off. I was a liitle bit afraid I would break it, but it comes right off. In fact, I removed and installed it several times.

The extra piece (green) is a ball point pen tube cut to size. You could use any hollow plastic tube. The handle could be lowered down the shaft if you open up the hole on the lowest part of the new shifter. The shaft is a little bigger than 9/16" and the hole in the shifter was about 1/2". I opened up the shifter with a rat tailed (round) file. The new shifter could be dropped about 3 3/8" if I filed the hole a little more and took out the pen tube. I may play with the height if I don't like it.

you could cut that lil lip off the shifter and slide it down further? or is 9/16 measured with that lip on it? or a different handle i guess if thats the case right ? i am thinkin on the same idea but i like the shorter shifter makes it easier to use my ash tray in my xj lol ....but i read a few shop manuals saying just pull the shifter straight up but i didnt wanna break it and not get it back on and not work after so thanks you for proving that it just pops off gave me a lil ease of mind with this mission too thanks eh.....hope the pen don't bend on ya

In the 4th picture, you'll see the unpainted part of the shaft where there is a groove and then paint. The painted shaft is about 5/8" where the unpainted is about 9/16". I didn't want to file the opening to the hole too big at first to push it all the way down in case I didn't like it that low. I am confident that NO plastic tube will be needed if you open up the hole in the new handle drop it all the way down. I'm going to drive it for a while to see if I like it at this height. If not, I will open her up and drop her down. The good thing about this is it can be returned to stock at any time. If you are having doubts if the new one will fit, drive your Jeep to the auto parts store and pop it the stocker off in the parking lot. I had mine off and on no less than 5 times before I mounted the new handle. I remember doing a search on this subject a couple of months ago and some guys are having problems with the plastic (white) piece breaking while in use without ever removing the stock handle. It had left them unable to get their Jeep out of park and into gear. They fixed their problem with a piece of chopstick... yep, a chopstick.
