Sounds like something is out of balance... Don't know why, but it can have an affect at only certain frequencies... harmonics or whatever. Anyway, check your wheels first. Dried mud caked on the inside? Missing wheel weights? If you don't see anything, pull them off, clean them up, then take your Jeep down to the local tire shop and have them balance all four. If that doesn't solve it, well, then it's going to be more expensive.

If the jeep has been lifted at all, or has many miles, the castor angle may be off. If you have a lift and the factory lower frount control arms, they do not provide enough castor angle, this can be fixed by purchasing any number of after market lower arms. If you have no lift at all, the factory rubber bushings may be blown and need to be replaced. If none of this applies to you try a aftermarket steering stabilizer, somthing stronger than your factory one.

Gage I also have a 97 TJ with the exact same problem. Same speed and shaking. If you get it figured out let me know what you found. I'll do the same for you. Maybe I'll try the tire balancing this weekend.

Is it speed or RPM related? Meaning if you are cruising at 55mph and you feel shaking in 5th gear (or 3rd with an auto), what happens when you downshift and stay at the same speed? Does it keep shaking exactly the same? If so, then breath a sigh of relief, because the solution will probably be the wheels. Of course if you have a lift you have to tell us some details and the scenario may be something like the others have mentioned.

Don't know if have fixed it yet, but I had this problem after mine had been in an accident and the transmission mount was broken. I replaced that and it works fine.
