school me on paint and primer for axles
okay so i want to paint my axles because they have alot of surface rust
what primer and paint should i use? im looking for something that will hold up and not rust underneath.
i have some duplicolor primer sealer the part number is dap 1699 i believe
will this primer be good or should i return it for something better?
just for general knowledge my plan of attack is to wire brush the axles clean
cause im not to keen on rust converters

i just used a regular primer and a gloss black after cleaning them with simple green and the paint held up great....right up until i sold my truck last december

I just wire brushed & sprayed on 3 coats of black gloss rustolium paint .Looks better then new.

this is the premium set but you don't need all of it for just the axles

just wire brush them as much as you can and spray them with rustoleum spray paint.

some self etching primer and a good quality gloss paint is the way to go IMHO

get a semi-gloss black....the gloss black will show more imperfections

ive been told that self etching primer is only for completely bare metal

You said you were gonna wire wheel the axle before painting so it will be bare but no that's not absolutely necessary. You need to do a good degreasing job though or nothing will stick.

I've been thinking of hitting mine with a brush then using Ospho to neutralize the rust and then some rattle can to keep the rust from getting back on it.
Read up on phosphoric acid treatment for rusty metal.

ya dude the nice thing about semi gloss and the ol wire brush action, ist that it is cheap... and if you chip it or any imperfections show though, brush it and paint it again. no big deal. thats what i did on my tj. looked really really good. did my drive shafts too.

Im planning on using a set for my savvy rockers and corners, when i order them. I appreciate the idea, it should be pretty easy to touch up. My wife wont be so mad at me because they come out of my clothes in the wash!!
