Savvy Front Bumper Install

Christmas came a couple days early in the form of a UPS Delivery from Savvy Offroad


First of all, this is what I am replacing. A Full 60" Width Hanson with Winch bar... It's been a good bumper, I had no issues with it, but wanted to move to a "stubbier" (eventually thinking tube fenders as well) and lighter model, so enter the Savvy...



I started by removing the Hanson, and cleaning and preparing the install area, You'll note that I don't have a stock swaybar and am running the ORO Swayloc, this comes into play later when mounting the Winch plate.



Here is the Savvy out of the box, includes the Winch Mount, the Recovery Points, all of the hardware (Grade 8 and Zinc coated in most cases), a couple of stickers. There are some fog-light mounts that are forthcoming soon (Gerald tells us that they will go under the (2) 1/2" bumper mounting bolts on either side on top, I'll add pics once I get them installed)


Because I don't have the stock swaybar, I started by mounting the Fairlead mount in the "rear" position (towards the back (top) of the bumper in the picture below). This pushes the winch and fairlead back a little bit to try to protect everything when playing in the rocks. There is also a mounting position which brings the Fairlead mount out far enough to clear the stock sway bar. This obviously could be moved if you switched to Antirock, OROSwayloc, or eventual Savvy Dual Rate Swaybar (I'm guessing). The 3/8-24 x 1 Grade 8 Fairlead mounting bolts are torqued to 40 lbs

You'll also see the recovery points, which each use 4 beefy -20 x 1-1/4 long Hex Head cap screws (Grade 8/Zinc) hardware torqued to 100lbs each



Here is what the underside looks like with the 4 bolts for the Fairlead Mount and the 8 bolts for the recovery points.


Next I'm ready to mount my Winch. I decided it was easier to turn everything upside down than try to balance the Bumper with the Winch right-side up and tightening the bolts. My Superwinch came with metric mounting bolts that were just a tad wider than the 3/8" Holes. I could have drilled, but instead made a quick trip to the hardware store and replaced with some grade 8 3/8" Bolts and hardware for bolting the winch to the bumper.



I was then ready to mount the Bumper to the Jeep. There are (6) - -13 x 1 long Hex Head cap screws (4 on top, 2 on the bottom) Torqued to 85lbs and (4) - 3/8-16 x 1-1/4 Grade 8 Bolts (Torqued to 35lbs) that go into the stock swaybar mounting locations (and would hold the stock swaybar on if you had it)


Here is the more or less installed Bumper...Once I rewire the Winch and put the Line back on and pull out of the garage, I'll post a couple more pics. Note the Roller's do stick out past the front edge of the bumper... Possible to get that caught up or banged up in the rocks and a Hawse would probably be the smarter move here. I already had this, and use a Roller Mount for my License plate, so will use for now. I'll eventually switch...

Very Nice, these are a great looking (and I am sure, just as functional) front bumper.

Is it shipped with the fairlead and recovery points already mounted? I am thinking of painting mine when it gets here (next Tuesday) so will have to take it apart, paint and then retorque. I suppose to put the light mounts on when Gerald gets them to us will involve taking it apart anyway.

Looks good! Mine should be here tomorrow, and it will be in MY possession on Friday. I'll be painting mine black, while leaving the bolts and everything else un-painted. Still haven't decided on the fairlead mount yet (which I may leave off for now as I don't even have a winch). I'll post up all my info in this thread when the time comes.

no all the little bolts come in little baggies and the fair lead is mounted in side of the bumper with two bolts you can undo with your fingers....Can I ask why you would possibly want to paint it though?

so your getting an aluminum bumper and then going to paint it just powder coat it then don't paint it

Haven't decided about paint for sure yet. My jeep is black. Chose to paint my Savvy rocker guards and was real happy with how those turned out looking compared to the pictures on here of others that didn't paint. Bumper is different so still thinking about it.

im not getting it, not a fan, not worried about weight on the yj. and to me painting it would be easy and easy to touch up, powdercoating chips easy to.

I'm getting an aluminum bumper because I think it is a well designed product and I love the weight savings, not because I want a silver bumper. I'm no expert but I am happy with a carefully done rattle can job (self-etching primer and then Rustoleum Satin probably) and don't need powder coat. I'll do the painting myself and will be able to touch it up easily when it gets bashed.

ive had rockers chip and a rear swing out. (on the edge not in the middle)
