So yesterday we were going to change the catalytic converter on our 98 TJ and thought it would be convenient to remove the transfer case skid plate for better access. once everything was properly supported we went to remove the 6 bolts that hold it in place. 4 of them rusted out and are no longer usable and neither are the holes that they go into.
The only thing we can think of is welding a steel plate onto the frame to secure the skid plate onto. Problem is that we don't have a welder.
With only the two rear screws holding it in place how much risk am I taking by driving it somewhere else to be welded?
Is there a way I can hold the skid plate in place while I drive it over?
Or is there a better solution?
Also this is not the first time we've had to re weld the frame, two of the rear control arm mounts came off last year, and there's a couple patches on the frame already. Aside from this the Jeep is in great condition, But we are starting to think that I may not be the best Idea to keep it with a frame that's been patched up multiple times.
