Runs terrible for 3 minutes .....then fine

Almost like a sticking cold choke, my 97 wrangler runs terrible for the first few minutes. Once is passes the sputtering, back firing stage it runs fine. This happens on a start up, even after Its been off for a few minutes. I changed plugs, wires, air filter and still no change. It also runs a bit loud in the beginning like a possible exhaust leak that heats up and seals itself. Could this be the problem?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance..

Joe

I have a 97 and mind did the same thing.

I took it to the dealership and thought it was my fuel pump and the couldn't figure it out. It would start but run like crap for a few minutes and act like it was going to run out of gas.

Turned out it was my front O2 sensor.

Once I replaced that a few thousand miles ago, it's been great.

Think I should try that for mine too then? Is it easy to install, and I heard to stay away from the Bosch, is that right?

check to see if any of the exhaust manifold bolts are missing.. i had the same problem and my rear stud was sheared off. sounds like you have an exhaust leak to me. very notorious for these jeeps. i would also check the o2 sensors as earlier stated.

if it does go away when the jeep is warm i am 90 percent sure it is an exhaust leak or the o2's
