Routing air intake up under the vent panel?

Excuse my faulty memory; I've forgotten the proper name for that panel. I'm referring to the one behind the hood, through which the wipers are mounted.

I'm thinking of routing my air intake through the engine bay and under that panel as a sort of quasi-snorkel. I'm not going to be taking my Jeep through any serious mud/water as it's my daily driver and I don't need to worry about changing all my fluids that often, but I do go through mudholes occasionally and I'm thinking moving the intake up there would offer some added protection against sucking up water without giving my Jeep that ******baggerous look of a homemade intake drilled into the hood. Plus, the air up under that panel should be a fair amount cooler than the air in the engine bay.

Thoughts?

What about some sort of shaker hood similar to what was an option on Mustangs/MoPars/Firebirds? I have not seen anybody try this.

"cowl vent snorkel" or "cowl induction" is the phrase you want to search for. Many write-ups.

It will work very well. Just have to find a filter that fits. You can also put a scoop on the vent to keep rain out a bit. For added fuel mileage re-locate the IAT sensor to the intake tube, I think yours is mounted in the manifold. I have this on mine and besides getting the air intake up a couple inches, it also has much more power and 2-3 MPG better mileage.

Pre '05 or '06 models have them threaded into the manifold. Sort of looks like a temp sender unit. The '06 models have them in the air tube, maybe '05 as well.

INTAKE AIR TEMP is what it stands for. The units mounted in the manifold give false readings as they become a heat sink. Mount them in the tube and insulate the tube and there is a much truer reading.

I think 2-3 mpg better mileage makes the hassle worthwhile. And being mine has 2 filters the inside filter should not get dirty that quick. The top filter which collects the majority of dirt is easy to get to.

I am doing a long trip today and will report back with mileage. I expect about 17 mpg or so.

I didn't mean it won't work. I just prefer the setups with an airbox under the hood, then some piping from that into the cowl.

I'm one of those weirdo's that checks his filter pretty much any time I open the hood.

I'm with ya on that one. Make a routine maintenance item difficult to get to it will no longer be a routine maintenance item.

One of the ideas, besides the couple extra inches in height, of mounting the air box/filter in the cowl is to get it away from all that under hood heat. Hence, cold air induction- - CAI. The air box under the hood is an oven/heat sink. Having the air come from the cowl does indeed help, but just having a insulated tube is better.
