Rough Country 2.5" Lift, Helpful Do's and Dont's

Hey Guys,

This is my first official post, although I have been lingering in the forums for a while now. I recently decided to lift my 2003 4cyl TJ a little bit. I'm going with a 2.5" suspension lift from Rough Country mostly because of its popularity and positive reviews from many of the members here on JF. I'm going to be installing it soon so I was looking to reach out to anyone that has experience installing this lift (or any similar lift) for some do's and dont's. Anything will most likely be helpful so thanks in advance!

DO buy or rent some strut compressors. Some people don't use or need them. You'll want them-trust me.

DO liberally apply some PB Blaster on all nuts & bolts 2-3 days prior to removal.

I heard those compressors come in handy, especially if you dont have the Jeep jacked up too high. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Do you have this lift? Any takes on how it rides? Better or worse than stock

I had the lift for about 7 months or so, then changed to Currie 4" with Antirock.

I wasn't happy with the product, but there are many folks that have it and are quite satisfied. People seem to either love it or hate it

What were your dislikes? On or Off road pro's/cons?

And I hope I'm on the left hand side of that "or" !

This'll open up a hornets nest---it usually does

I installed the lift on my Jeep when it was stock and barely got 1-1.25" of lift. The initial shocks were too long, I called, and to give them credit, they sent the "correct" length shocks immediately. My problem was that the shorter "correct" shocks were still too long since I didn't get the full 2.5" of lift out of the springs. So I had around 1.25" LESS shock travel than the lift was designed for.

Now granted, I have the stiffer springs due to having 4.0L/dual top Rubi. The RC springs while being "progressive" just don't give the support I needed to net the lift I was expecting from the product. Once I started putting accessories like heavy bumpers & a winch on, it got worse.

If I had gotten 2.25-2.5" of lift on the Jeep in stock form, then lost some lift with the extra weight, I'd be more understanding. However I went from 1-1.25" stock to <1" accessorized.

I didn't expect the product to perform like something twice it's price, but I didn't think it'd sag like Betty White's mammaries either...

My personal opinion is if you don't have a hard-top and especially if you have a 4cy, you will have no problems. Other than that, it's a good "starter lift" to get some experience wrenching on your rig at a low price. I see it as paying $300 tuition to a "TJ suspension 101" course.

Again, there are tons of guys that love their RC. I'm sure they'll speak up. But that's my story and I'm stickin' to it

lol, pay $300 and learn what not to buy...thats a fun way to look at it

OP: to answer questions, make sure to use spring compressors, and double check the shock length and bumpstop height. plenty of info in those links to help you determine that. lift installs aren't that bad, good luck
