Rocks in my gearbox?

97 TJ, 4.0, 5 speed 156,000 miles

I have a rather loud knock / clank at idle which seems to be coming from the gearbox or x-fer case. At first I thought it was a exhaust rattle but I have changed my mind. The noise is loudest when idling cold. The noise seems to quiet down as the engine warms and is gone with the rpm above 1200 or so. Any ideas or similar experience? Thanks.

I had a similar sound a couple of years ago, sounded like rocks. It ended up being my catalytic convertor. It sure was quite after that was repaired!!!
