Removing Transfer Case Drop
Today I am pulling out the transfer case so I can install the SYE kit. While I have it apart I am thinking about removing the 1" TC drop. My first question is, do I need to worry about the linkage or anything when I remove this. Right now everything shifts good. It looks like the 4low selector is easily adjusted by loosening a single bolt on the linkeage. If all I have to do is loosen this bolt and readjust the linkeage, that seems easy enough. Is that all I will have to do?
My second question is just how do I push the TC back up. Do I just jack it up in place and reinstall the skid plate?

You don't need to drop the transfer case to do the SYE.
I did mine in the jeep.

Hmmm. I have heard a couple people that did it under the Jeep. Do you still have to remove the front drive shaft if you do it under the Jeep?

If I remember right, I did remove the front drive shaft. It was real simple.
I drove the front of my jeep up onto some vehicle ramps and jacked up the rear and supported with jack stands to get enough clearance under the vehicle to work on the transfer case. I am 6' 1" and I could actually sit-up under the jeep while working on the transfer case. Check out www.4x4explor.com for a detailed right-up on this project. That coupled with the instructions from the SYE kit will make it real easy. If you can wrench at all, this should be a fairly easy project. Hope this helps.

Well, I got my SYE installed. But I ran into a snag when I went to remove the TC drop. The bolts that were holding the TC skid on are not threaded all the way to the head, they are smooth where the spacer was. DOH! Looks like I will need new bolts. I am looking for a place to buy them locally, but I will probably end up going to a junk yard or ordering them online. The only odd thing about them is the conicle shape under the bolt head so I might be able to find some conicle shaped washers.
But it is that close to being done. It's not even bolted up yet and I already like the looks of the TC back up under the Jeep. |

I removed the skid, but I did do the SYE under the Jeep. It was not too bad, but would definitely have been easier out on my workbench. Live and learn. The only problem I had was with the oil pickup. It was a pain keeping it all together while fitting the case back together, but I got it done.
I need to play with my linkeage also. I currently have a drop bracket on the shifter and I am going to pull that off and shove everything back up under the Jeep. |
