Removing Gear Shift Knob?

I have a 97 and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the gear shift knob off. I need to take it off to replace the shift boot retainer ring that broke.

Any help guys?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Pry out the piece of plastic with the shift pattern on it and you will find a nut holding the knob on. There are a few posts on here that show the pictures. I removed the shift pattern piece and replaced it with a Miller Lite cap.

Mine was super tuff to get off. Although I realisied after getting it off that there is a "hole" to the left of the shift pattern that should grip a screwdriver easier.

I destroyed mine getting the cap off, but a new knob and cap was pretty cheap at the Jeep dealer, plus I took the opportunity to replace the shift boot too so it all looks new and ready for another 100k miles!
