Removing ABS
So I'm not a huge fan of the fact that my jeep has abs but it wasn't a big enough deal for me to not buy it. Anyways, is there a way to remove the ABS and just run regular brakes? On a side note it's my DD and needs to pass inspection. TIA
Drew

I have to ask why. It doesn't seem like it would interfere with your ability to drive at all. And good luck if you ever rear end someone and they discover that you disabled an important safety feature.

I agree, ABS ruins brake feel. Pulling the fuse will disable them, but you'll probably get an idiot light on the dash. Another option would be to get the brake system from a non-ABS TJ and swap it into yours. I'd check local junkyards or anybody parting out a Jeep for that stuff.

My neighbor just asked me this same thing. I forgot about the fuse part.
ABS in the winter is horrible. I would do anything in my power to disable ABS if I ever had it What part of the South Shore are you from? |

And the reason I want to disable my ABS is that it sucks in the snow and when the roads are wet it comes on far too frequently, i learned to drive innitially without it so i can effectivly brake with just the normal brakes. So pulling the fuse will do it? no other altercations necessary? If i get the brake system from a local junk yard what exactly would I need to get, and would this involve new lines?

Disable your '97 TJ's ABS system by pulling the two ABS relays inside the PDC (power distribution center) under the hood. Once those two ABS relays are pulled, there is no ABS fuse that I could find, you'll never know the ABS system was ever there and you won't need to do anything else.
Personally, though I had to disable my '97 TJ's ABS to install a rear Dana 44 axle, I strongly disagree with the above negative comments on ABS. Most of that kind of stuff is nothing more than repeating old wive's tales and myths. In my strongest possible personal opinion, the advantages of ABS FAR outweigh the minor possible disadvantages. I don't believe there's a human alive that can out-brake a properly functioning ABS system. There are only a few situations where ABS may not be a good thing... but rare indeed.

My ABS kicks on at 5mph when i go to stop, I feel as if this isn't right, correct me if i'm wrong though. Not trying to say I can outbrake an ABS unit but i was throwing that piece of data in there because i know almost all of my friends learned how to drive on cars with ABS so i was pointing out that I have been taught another way so it won't freak me out if i have to do a panic stop and it doesnt kick in

![]() That is whack! I love the ABS in my Grand Cherokee and in my Impala! On icy and snow packed roads the TJ stays in the garage. No human can match ABS ability to stop a vehicle in slippery conditions. I am willing to listen to your explanation however.

I have abs on my 98tj and honestly its so basic an abs system its almost NOTHING.Its a single line system so its really more of "token abs" wow look jeep has abs.I can lock my tires up easily in the snow. The abs pump is pumpin its butt off but they are still locking up.Honestly i feel no difference in braking from my non abs tj.
Go look under the hood of any car with a REAL ABS system, you will notice there is ALOT more to properly designed abs than just a pump.My wifes GM car REFUSES to lock or skid the tires i don't care what you do,but it has a dual line ABS system. I'm not sure what jeep was thinking but i'm giessing like i said it was the WOW factor for selling. Some people gotta have ABS,whether it really works or not LOL. |

And yes, in a panic stop situation ABS may be able to stop the vehicle in a shorter distance than I can, but if you actually think while you drive you shouldn't find yourself in too many panic stop situations. I've been driving non-ABS vehicles for ten years (the first four of those years on Long Island, NY, which I think most people will agree is NOT an easy place to drive) and I've been in a total of two accidents: rear-ended twice. The first time was while I was at a stop sign in perfect, dry conditions and the second time I was stopped at a red light in the rain. One of the two guys that hit me had ABS (the guy in the rain). I'm comfortable relying on my own driving ability and I don't like the way ABS makes the brake pedal feel, so as long as I have a choice I'll keep buying vehicles without ABS. |

Wanna laugh? Last year in bad slushy snow conditions, roads covered and slick as they can get i'm driving behind a older fellow driving a Cherokee. He suddenly stops to turn into a gas station, being what i thought was far enough behind him i put the brake pedal on my 98 abs equiped tj.TWO THING HAPPENED.....ALL 4 wheels locked up and I started sliding fast towards the back of the cherokee and the abs pump was pumping full on!
I realized if i didn't do something I was going to slam into that cherokee at about 30mph and do major damage.I let off the brakes and stood on the gas pedal and drove around him off the side of the road.Afterwards i was TOTALLY shocked my abs jeep locked its wheels like this in snow.I then took a close look at the abs system and was very very very unhappy. Its such a poorly designed system i think jeep leading people on to think this system will do anything other than get them into trouble is crazy. I tried the same thing in the smow with my gm abs system and the vehicle stopped properly! If you have a early jeep with single line abs DON"T be fooled into a false sense of safety! |

I had to remove my ABS when I put the rear disc brakes on from a Grand Cherokee. I went all the way and even removed the wiring for the ABS and tossed it in the trash. I've locked up the tires in snow/ice when I had ABS. One time I was driving on the ice covered street going about 12 mph and barely put on my brakes when the ABS was hooked up and all 4 tires locked up and I got completely sideways. Thankfully I was the only one on my side of the road.
