rear differential fluid

I went and got my oil changed today and the guy doing it told me that because i have bigger tires i need to change it more often and i was due. He showed me a sample of the fluid and said it looked pretty dirty.

I've never heard of you having to change it more often just because one has bigger tires. Obviously if you offroad it will do it, but even so I dont theink it would effect it that much. How often should you change the fluid and how can you tell when it is time??

The 3000 mile oil change interval is BS. Even the factory manual recommends oil changes at 6000 miles(when not doing towing or driving in extreme conditions).

I change my oil every 5000 miles with regular high quality motor oil(don't think synthetic is really worth it in Jeep).

I think he's talking about the differential fluid, not engine oil.

You know that you have two differentials, don't you? Front and back. I love these oil change places. They are always looking to snag an extra buck or two.

I've never heard about having to change the diff fluid because of the size of the tires. Seems to me that if you follow the severe duty (as in "offroad") schedule it's about every 12k miles (correct me if I'm wrong), unless you go through deep water, in which case you need to check and perhaps change ASAP.

Do a search on "differential fluid". Tons of info. I know this firsthand.

So you change your diff, tranny and TC fluids every 3-4 months or 3k miles? Do you wheel often? Even when you don't go through deep water? Seems like a lot. I've had cars that I've raced and changed the fluids every 30k miles. I guess Jeeps are different in that respect? Do you use synthetic or the Mopar fluids?

Unless you have water contamination, I personally believe that changing your diff fluid ever 3K miles is a bit extreme. It may work fine for you, but I doubt most folks require that frequency. I do mine yearly unless it gets torn down for other maintenance/repair.

i use vaviolen (sp) i wheel once or twice a month and usally put axles under the water so i figure why chance it, i do oil every 3 months/k miles, and diffs every 6 or after water, just preventive measures worth it to me plus allows me to play when no new toys comin in

So, do you find you are having a lot of water contamination as a result of your wheeling/water crossing?

That's about what I've been averaging as far as wheeling goes...about 1-3 times/month. Seems like I get my axles covered as well, or at least it's close. I have a thread dedicated to this subject here:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/water-crossings-how-deep-too-deep-213648/

At any rate, I feel I've done enough water crossings to merit a look-see and a change of fluids. At least it'll give me an idea of what I'm up against.

I do change my oil fequently..about every 3-4k miles or 3 months, whichever is first. It's very dusty where I wheel. First change was at 2k miles. The Mobil 1 is going in next oil change at 4500. I'll change it when I do the rest of the fluids.
