Rear Axle / Rear Tire Clunking After Exiting Expressway

When I first exit the expressway, I can hear, and almost feel in my seat, a clicking or clunk, clunk, clunk in my rear driver side tire. My feeling is that it’s something to do with my differential. More interesting, it stops after I let off the clutch right after I take off for the first time (from the exit ramp onto the road).

It doesn’t matter if I’m in neutral, under power, or coasting, the clicking is there. Last summer when I first noticed it, I actually hung my head out the door and watched the sidewall of that tire “pulse” at each clunk. The sound itself sounds just like a tire bead seating at the tire shop or hitting the sidewall with a mallet.

Any ideas of what this could be would be appreciated.

Maybe when they mounted the tire they accidently sealed up a midget inside and he is trying to get out/getting thrown around when the wheel spins?

LoL seriously though, pop off your diff. cover and take a look in there!

LEMME OUT LEMME OUT!

Seriously, have you noticed any kind of leaks? You may have axle seal bearings that need to be addressed. Have you had shocks replaced at all (even with OEM ones)? Check your shock mounts to be sure they are solid.

Did you buy this new? Is there possibly an autolocker in the back that you didn't know was there? Some guy on here found an ARB in his, so it is possible.

Keep moving forward. But keep an eye on history, for if you don't, you are doomed to repeat it.

I bought the jeep new in 03.

I was hoping that someone on this forum would have had the same issue before. It seems that there is always one person who jumps up and says, "I know exactly what your talking about... and this is what's causing it".

It does sound pretty serious to me. I took it to the dealership (I'm at 68,000 miles) and the first thing the mechanic pointed at was the rease hitch bouncing in the reciever. He was so proud of himself for solving the problem. I asured him that the hitch was not the source of the problem. After that he pointed to the rear sway bar links. That's when I decided to leave and never come back. Dealerships crack me up.

Any other ideas would be great. Thanks for the quick responses.

I would recommend crawling underneath it and checking the rear track bar. It might be loose, check all those bolts. You could also take a look at your shocks and make sure everything is sured up there as well. One last thing, possibly jack up the rear and see if the rear wheel bearings are shot? Just a few ideas.. hope it's nothing serious

Thanks for the information / suggestions.

I wonder if it has anything to do with heat, knowing that it only happens as I'm exiting the highway.

I also noticed that it happens more often while coasting. So it's something that happens while rolling to a stop (i'm certain it's not brake related).

I would say its either your rear trackbar loosening up or its going to be in your rear end... 2 days ago I sheared some spider gears in my rear end, they clunk and pop HARD when making a turn, but there's almost no noise going straight. You could have some scarred teeth inside the carrier. I'd def. crawl under there and take a look at both of those. With a little bit of lift the trackbar's do like to act funny, but it sounds more like in ur rear end.
