Re-painting my TJ

This is a thread remake. For some reason ALL my photobucket pictures got messed up, so I figured it would be easier to make a new thread and condense everything.

Basically the back story is my dad bought the Jeep in 2001 (3 years old) and got it cheap because the first owner rolled it on the drivers side. Looking back on this we realized it was more than rolled on it's side, it was heavily abused. None-the-less it has been a rock solid Jeep. Zero frame or inside tub rust and the engine is bullet proof. But because of the crappy body work previously done, the outside suffered.

Anyway, the Jeep was passed down to me when I turned 16 and knew the first thing that I would do is new paint.

I'm a bit sad because it wasn't until AFTER I deleted all my pictures off photobucket, did I realize that there were some pictures on there that I didn't have on my computer, but I still have all the high points.

Before:

Removed tailgate and began sanding/chipping the old filler off:

Finished sanding:

Still not quite sure what the deal with the rear quarter panel is. It seemed like the rust spots were right along where tack welds were behind the panel, and were where someone took a grinder to it, and did it really badly because they dug into the metal. You can also see on the back it rusted through to the that body mount box, but the other two bad rust spots didn't rust through.

So I decided to keep the body filler the the minimum. Instead of caking it on like the previous owner I went light, even if it meant the body wasn't perfectly flat. Here are pictures of the body filling:

Then taped off and began spraying, you can also see I used more filler:

Ok, so here is where I stand. The windshield frame and passenger fender still need to be painted. There are also some thin spots and run spots that need fixing. I'm planning on finishing over spring break, hopefully it will warm up by then. The weekend before spring break I will pop the windshield out, then tape off the WHOLE Jeep and and try to fix up some more stuff on the passenger side. Then spray 3-4 more layers and then get a new windshield installed.

I don't know what I'm going to do about the fender because I might just buy some Metalcloak fenders and paint them.

So there it is, started last summer, hopefully finish spring break.

Wow! That was some rust. Looks like you are making some fine progress (after post 2).

Looks good, i like the color choice.

What kind of system did you do for the tail gate? i want to do something similar. got more pics of it?

Nice Work! Looks a heck of a lot better. That was a lot of labor you put into that bodywork and rust removal. What type of paint did you use? In the future I'm going to have to repaint my hood. There's all these miniscule paint cracks underneath the clear it looks like. Must be from heat. My 08 Civic has that same type of cracks. I'll be doing that one myself too whenever the cracks get worse. I'll hold off for now because of material cost. Base/Clear paint costs are sky high.

With the tailgate I just went to Home Depot and found heavy duty barn hinges. The only thing you have to be careful off is finding ones that are flush, and the hinge pin doesn't stick out. Then I just got some grade 8 bolts and bolted it up. The tub was a real PITA because I had to partially drop the gas tank, and found out the tub is boxed in right under the tailgate, so we drilled all the way through and used some crazy 1/4 metal we had laying around as a backing plate.

Then with the tailgate I just drilled all the way through and used big washers. Ordered some (CJ?) tailgate straps to use with the tailgate. The only problems is the factory pin and door latch catch so you have to pull really hard. The pin needs to go up about 3/16 of an inch but is as far as it goes, so that's going to need fixing. Then I also wish I had set everything up before we removed the tailgate from the factory hinges so it was lined up better.

I used PPG Omni single stage urethane, I have to go look at the can for the exact color though. Like you said, base/clear is really expensive, and it's a Jeep, so I'm not looking for show quality shine. But I must say I polished and waxed it last weekend and it looked awesome.

Still cost me upwards of 270 for a gallon of color and the reducer/activator.

I also wish I had just gone to a junkyard and pulled a new hood and tailgate instead of spending almost 100 bucks on fiberglass filler.

Anyone else getting red x's instead of photos for about half the pictures?

Must be you :dunno:. I still see them and I checked, I still have 8GB of bandwidth.

Works now, I restarted IE, guess that was the problem ? Looks good, I have those same rust spots on the rear underneath the lower hinge and the same spot on the drivers side. I tried grinding them in the fall but really couldnt get it very smooth. Think I'll try again this spring with some body filler, but it'll probably need to be cut out to really keep it from coming back. Or just get corners.... :)
