Rattling in Neutral

Hey guys/gals

I've noticed that when I put my Jeep in neutral and let up the clutch I hear a rattling noise coming from directly under me. Once I engaged the clutch it's gone. Any suggestions on what that may be and how serious of the problem it is.

Thanks in advance

That is totally normal and not a problem. ALL of our Jeeps make that same noise when in neutral and the clutch is out. It's just the input shaft of the transmission spinning around inside the tranny. We hear such noises in our Jeeps because they're not loaded with soundproofing like cars are.

As a buddy of mine once told...."Enjoy that sound..it's the sound of a well built NV3550". Ever since then it's been like music to my ears.

I don't have it in front of me now, but there is a TSB issued by Jeep for the NV3550 trannys making rattling noise while in gear, for 00 and 01 I believe.

21-002-01 is the TSB number for gear rattle/noise while in neutral, clutch out. I mis-worded it earlier.

Yeah, my '98 does it when shifting, in neutral, and when the rpms drop to less than 1900. Its normal. Haven't seen or heard one that does not do it yet, although it scares the crap out of my passengers I usually get "I'm never riding with you again until you get the transmission fixed." Or "It sounds like your transmission is about to fall out!"

LMAO

I've wanted a Jeep for the longest time and now that I have one...just a bit paranoid Don't want it to break when out on the trails.

Great forum GREAT MEMBERS with GREAT INFO, glad I found it.

Thanks again all.

Wait a tick, does anyone know if an AX-5 is supposed to make the sounds like that? I know a NV3550 does, but I've never heard of an AX-5 making it other than mine.....
