I posted the other day that my TJ got hit by a drunk.
The Insurance company is totalling it.
I am thinking of either getting another TJ or maybe a JK.
I am alittle leary buying a JK, because I believe you should never buy a new model the first year.
Anyway, if I go with a TJ, Any opinions on what year is best?
I was leaning towards an 06, just cause its the newest, but heard issues with the paint on the newer models.
I had a 98 Sahara , and the Spice Hard Top is still being stored in my brothers Yard in NJ. I'm selling it if anyone is interested. I may have some other parts that I'll be listing soon, especially if I go with the JK.

Personally i would look into a 04 - 06 rubi. Got the D44 with locker, 31's etc...And yeah the paint on my 05 is s$%#. scratches VERY easily.

Yes, all non-Rubi Unlimited models come with the D44, 3.73 gears, and limited slip standard.
This thread lists many specs for stock TJs:

Have you lost your brakes yet and rolled down a hill? Happened to my buddies twice. Something to do with the traction control, wheels spinning, and ABS trying to work. He's been contacting DC, but I don't yet know the results of his conversations with them. Each time it happened he ended up stopping because he hit a rock with the rear axle. Both times he snapped one rear shock in half. Good luck and be careful.

Well, while you're offroading, you are supposed to have the ESP system off. The ESP is no good for offroading conditions. In 4WD Low, the ESP system is automatically disabled, but not in 4WD HI, you have to disable it using the button when in 4HI. If your friend had traction control problems, he shouldn't be using them, especially in a hill climb, as it can apply brakes to your tires and KILL your power. ESP is NOT the same thing as lockers. I had someone tell me back when I had a TJ still that he didn't need lockers because he had ESP....very bad misconception. Try going on a beach with ESP on? You lose traction for a second and you will feel your momentum drop like a rock as the system brakes the tires that lost traction for a second. Lockers help in offroading, ESP hurts in most offroading situations.
Though, I've never heard of a single issue like the one you're describing about losing brakes, and I know quite a few JKs who offroad, and have never seen it on any JK forums, must be an isolated incident, I'd have your friend take it in for service ASAP!!!!! It is not a "JK problem," that is something very wrong. My guess is, if he is actively offroading with ESP on, that he probably over-used his brakes. Because ESP would probably be CONSTANTLY braking different tires all over the place whenever they slipped even a little.
If he was in 4LO at the time, it could have been caused by unknowingly using ESP on other parts of the trail leading up to this spot. Disable ESP when offroading!!!
Just an idea, don't know the specifics of your friend's situation.

The only problem with the new '07 is that the aftermarket component manufacturers don't really quite have all the stuff ready for it that they claim they do. A friend of mine is still having big troubles getting her '07 lifted with the latest problems being driveshaft related.

A recall has just hit the news (from SFgate.com).
"The Chrysler recall involves more than 156,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Commander SUVs from the 2006-2007 model years, more than 90,000 2007 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and nearly 50,000 2007 Dodge Nitro SUVs.
Chrysler spokesman Max Gates said the automaker had received about 20 complaints of vehicles experiencing a delay in braking when drivers tried to come to a stop after coasting uphill. To fix the problem, the computer connected to the antilock brake system will be reprogrammed.
There has been one crash tied to the issue and no injuries reported, Gates said. Owners will be notified by mail beginning later this month."

if you get a JK and its not a rubicon get an 2007 not an 08 cuz they stopped putting the 4.10 gears in the Sahara and X models. This unless u plan on upgrading gears.

Ron, sorry about your loss. There are a lot of TJ's for sale I have noticed (must be moving up to JK's, or just want better MPG), so you'll have a lot to pick from. Personally I would look for a Rubicon, or Rubicon LJ. My dealer has two Rubicons, both low milage. I also saw a nearly new Rubi (MTR's had no wear!) at another dealer.
