Question about buying a hard top

Work with me, I am a novice. We have a Wrangler 06 soft top right now and we have had some cracks and holes due to weather conditions. We repaired it temporarily, but then we have had two break ins within the past 6 months. This happened in two different cities. They ripped the back open and the zippers do not connect anymore. The plan was to buy a new soft top, but now we want a hard top to try and prevent future break ins. We don't leave anything of value in the Jeep, but they are damaging things. When I looked up prices I noticed that they are way out of our budget. Any helpful hints on alternatives, making your own, good deals, etc? Please and thank you.

Look on craigslist for your area. Prices will vary by location and season. Down here, a used factory hardtop goes for about 800-1200. It took me quite a while to find one for 750

A hard top is an annoyance and will not prevent future break ins. Sure if there is another Jeep with a soft top sitting next to yours they will go for the easier target. Just don't fall into a false sense of security just because you have a hard top. I am not saying not to go with the hard top there are other benefits, just comes down to personal choice.
