question about air-conditioning

I'm planning on buying a new Wrangler and I was hoping that some of you can give me some information about the air-conditioning. More specifically I wanted to know how effective the non AC vents are in winter months. I'm planning to drive a lot in the snow and have noticed that AC defrosters work better and quicker at defogging the windshield in most cars. You can use the heat defroster but I've noticed that it only defogs the windshield and not all the other windows. This can case dangerous visability problems.

The other option would be to have the windows open, but this makes it a lot colder than just using the AC to defog the windows every few minutes. So do you guys think I should get the AC or is the vent good enough?

Go for the A/C...!!

The defroster really needs the A/C to function well, otherwise you're blowing hot-wet-air into the windshield. Also, you can aim the side vents into the windows, which does really well!

Thanks for the reply. I guess should have figured as much. Most cars I've been in have had this issue. Since AC isn't standard except for the Sahara models, I guess I'm going to have to special order it or find one that already has it as an option.

It is not just the extra vents. In most modern A/C equipped vehicles, turning on the defroster also activates the A/C unit to help remove humidity from the air inside the vehicle.

Remember, the frost on the window is excess humidity that condenses on the glass because the glass is colder than the dewpoint temperature. So on the A/C equipped vehicles, using both heat (to cause evaporation) and A/C (humidity removal), you get a much faster and more effective defogging!

I'm surprised that AC isn't a standard feature in every car now a days. If you are willing to paid several thousand dollars for a vehicle, what's another thousand for AC? I guess some people might be willing to live without it, but it seems like it's more of a necessity rather than a luxury. I was hoping that the Wrangler's vents would be more effective, but it sounds like it's the same as most cars....slow and ineffective.

Now that I think about it, I completely forgot about the time when I rode in a friend's non-AC Wrangler during a hot summer day. We were stuck in traffic with the top off but we were dying from the heat. It was even hot when we were in the shade from buildings close by. I guess the AC is also valuable in the summer even when you take the top off.
