Putting in 6-cylinder

I have a 4-cylinder in my 97 wrangler and the motor is dying. I was wondering if anyone knows what putting in a 6-cylinder motor would involve. Do people know how much it will cost and what it involves with the computer.
Thank you

I'm selling a 4.0/6 speed in the classifieds

I also have a factory service manual. You could be cruising in style!

Seriously though I can give you some info on what it would take if you want to PM me.

It will cost too much and take too much time and effort. You can either drop another 4 banger or you selling your 4 banger and buying a 6 cylinder model. For the effort to put a 4.0 in you could swap in a V8 and have some real power.

To do the switch you would need the following:

ECM
Wiring harness
Motor Mounts
Fan shroud
New transamission (the AX-5 would bolt up to the 6 cylinder)
New input shaft for the transfer case since the splines are different
New front drive line

I know I am biased as I am putting in a V8 and selling a 4.0, but it is much easier to find complete jeep motors to drop in than a V8. Not to mention the emissions legalities of a V8. By the time I am done I will have spent probably $15K (crate motor and trans). I definitely could have spent less but I wanted it to be like stock (but with more juice!). I am selling just about everything you have listed for $2K. For around $3K you could probably be driving assuming you do the work yourself.

I don't disagree that it's a huge amount of work and probably not worth it unless you really like your Jeep

Easiest way to do it is find a complete wrecked 4.0 TJ, buy it as a whole and swap everything over. Then when you get done sell the existing parts.

It's not as hard as they think they know, not! Take old drivetrain out, hang new (used) eng & trans. in place bolt skid pan up install trans. mount to skid
bolt new eng. frame mounts (available from dealer 75.00 each) to eng. weld to frame. Also need frame mount braces for mounts weld on as well. Front and rear shafts should fit mine did.you will also need shroud and PCM, complete eng. wiring harness, intake piping starter and alt. cause they're NOT interchangeable. You'll love the extra power..

wiring just depends on what year you get the 4.0 from. If it's from close to the same year as yours jeep then it should be fairly plug and play.

I did the swap. It was not hard. I purchased everything from a jeep salvage place for 1200. I spent maybe another 200 on misc stuff like hoses, plugs, oil and such. Only took a weekend.

Did you buy the complete drivetrain? And was yours an auto before? I really plan on doing this if i can acquire the stuff over a couple of year.

I bought the engine and auto trans bolted together. I had a 5m and went to an auto. I got the engine, trans, wiring, computer, TC input shaft, front drive shaft(needed because I went to an auto), and all the shifter stuff from the same guy. I bought new frame mounts at the dealer. I have a 97 and the motor/trans/wiring/computer is from a 99.

How do the gauges work after swapping the engine? Does the tach still function properly?
