I have a 2004 Sport 4.0L manual that's been giving me issues over the past month and a half. At first every time I would turn the key, I would hear the engine start to turn over but not fire up. I'd turn the key back and then forward again and it would fire right up.
Two weeks later, it fired right up on the first try, but as soon as I took my foot off the clutch (in neutral) it died. All electrical was still working, but the engine would no longer fire up. Had it towed to my mechanic and they can't find the problem. They checked the fuel pump, full pressure. Starter is fine they say. Eventually, they come to the conclusion that the its a sensor that's preventing it from firing up. So they replace it, and it starts fine.
Another two weeks later, and low and behold, the same thing happens. It fires up, and then dies as soon as I let out the clutch. Get it towed again, but this time I'm told it's the battery. So they change the battery and get it going again. I had them check the alternator just to be sure, and I'm told it's working well.
Sure enough, two more weeks along and it wont start at all. This time, however, it didn't fire and then die, it just wont fire up.
I'm lost, any ideas on what the problem might be?
