Problem Towing Tj For The First Time

I'm having a problem towing my dads TJ.Every year we hunt Wyoming. My dad tows his TJ back no problem. My dad passed away last year so I have his TJ.I hooked it up[TRANS IN PARK,TRANSFER CASE IN NEUTRAL AND KEY IN OFF]but I can't get it to track straight.I start it up get the wheels straight, turn it off get in my truck for a practice run ,look in the mirror and the TJ wheels are turned just a little to the right and they start pushing.
I've towed trailers,doubles but never a JEEP.I'm leaving the 29th so I hope
someone can help.My dad is looking down thinking what a goof ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One more thing I'm getting ready to put wheels and tires on.Some people
say 16's.It's my winter rig now.[5 to 6 foot of snow a year, not county main-
taned road.]I'll be running 31" Big Horns.

Thanks for any help
Mitch

I have an 06 , and the owners manual says park for tranny and neutral for TC.
Not sure but sounds like an alignment issue.

Ok, here you go, straight from my manual.
1. Depress brake pedal.
2. Shift auto trans into N (neutral).
3. Shift transfer case into N.
4. Start engine
5. Shift auto trans into D (Drive).
6. release brake pedal and ensure that there is no vehicle movement.
7. Shut the engine off and place the ignition key into the unlocked OFF position. (there is a position between the OFF locked and ON position that unlocks the steering wheel but doesn't turn on the electrical stuff, that's where you want to be for towing.)
8. Shift auto trans into P (park).
9. Apply parking brake.
10. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle. (I always attach my vehicle to the towing vehicle first but this is the order it is in the manual)
11. Release parking brake. (ready to tow)

Wouldn't unlocking the steering be best in this situation? I dont have any experience with towing TJ but it may help.

^This, X2. I have been flat towing my Jeep for years behind the motorhome and have done exactly as stated above. I have never had any problems. I tie a white plastic grocery bag around steering wheel at top dead center. I can see the wheel turn and re-center while cornering. Gives me a little extra piece of mind. Sounds like your steering wheel is not unlocked to me. First click...

Make sure you are doing that. X2 on steering wheel not unlocking.

There is your problem, the key should be on the first click. I flat tow my TJ all the time with no problem, just remember you can't back up. When you stop, always park where you can pull forward to leave.
