power steering pump pulley
changed my power steering pump on my TJ this week, after getting two bad rebuilds got a good one on the third try. my question is when i was putting the pulley on the third one got to almost flush with shaft and stopped just shy of being flush. the only thing i can tell so far is that belt runs a little off on the idler pulley below, not alot but about _ that distance from the back of pulley. probably not even that far out, just the only way to demonstrate distance. will this cause problems or is it fine, cause i broke two bolts and ripped my vice off the table trying to push this pulley on. other two bad pumps got to sit flush but not this one. any help would be cool. also what is a cheap place to buy a all metal radiator at. thanks

Sounds like you need a PULLEY INSTALLER/REMOVER TOOL

i bought 3 of those kits with the bolt and washer system. those are the bolts that i snapped in half or bent the snot out of and ripped one of the mounting bolts from my vice. wanted to know if it has to be flushed or not, cause if it does i have to buy another pulley, cause the one thats on it if i try anymore will break. thanks

Yes it should sit flush. The belt should be riding the serpentine pulley system about dead straight.
Unless the puley is damaged, I don't see a reason to replace it. I have this problem all the time. Pull the pulley off, take a peice of emery cloth and polish the pump shaft a bit, spray some decent lube on the shaft 7 pulley hub, and reinstall! Not all pump shafts are perfect, and sometimes need a little tweak!

This wont help you put it on yourself but is a good option none the less.
Rent one from checkers you pay 35$ or retail to use it and then you return it and they give your 35$ back. I had success with the remover but couldnt get the installer to put it back in because the threads pulled off (piece of junk). Got my $ back and i went to napa and they installed it for me in 10 minutes and charged me 6$. I wasted about an hour with that stupid installer tool should have just gone to napa first. Thank goodness I didnt have to buy that crappy tool. sorry to hear you bought 3. |

If you got the KD brand I posted up, then it has a lifetime warranty. You just take the broken part of the set back, and they get ya a new one. I keepthat set at home for use on my cars. I keep my Snapon set at work.

Agreed 100 percent. I have the KD brand and have removed and installed at least 20 pulleys with it.

That's good to hear you got it all worked out. It's just luck when it comes to PS pumps. I have been rollin around on a rebuilt unit from autozone, about 2yrs now. When my OE pump died the autozone store was nearby, and had one on the shelf. I have just never spent the time to replace it again.

Update on everything going total 5 pumps and 6 days of wrenching. The first 4 pumps were all bad from 4 differnt stores either leaked from differnt spots or couldn't get the pulley on all the way. Finally broke down and bought a brandnew one, 6 days and evrything still good. Next radiator and lift. Just relaized that I said the same stuff^^ up there. That's what you get for doing this at work
