Potential tj buyer

I currently own a CJ5 and a YJ. I'm looking into buying a TJ for better road manners. I just drove 4 hours to look at a 97 4.0 auto with 118k on it. It was junk, the transmission slipped on take off but then shifted ok. There was a little frame rust and a few dings. They were asking $6000, I told them to stick it up there a$$. Is the auto transmission junk or did I look at a bad one? I like the idea of an auto in rocks and mud, plus I'm sick of shifting. Any advice in what to look for or stay away from would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

97-02' is the best.It has adjustable bands.

The owners of the 97-02 Jeeps with 32rh auto trans seem to love them. Reported to be very durable.

The early auto is fine.
U want a dana 44 rear end!
Dont buy a jeep with a dana 35 rear axle!

The 32RH in that JEEP is an awesome transmission and very stout. Probably just needed to have the filter and fluid replaced.

Though a D44 is more desirable, an upgraded D35 should not give you any problems especially with an auto. What you do want to stay away from is the 3.07 gear ratio.
